Integration Details: INK Token and L2 Tech on Kraken's Core Platform
Crypto exchange Kraken officially announced on July 24, 2025, that it will integrate the Ink Layer 2 (L2) protocol and its native INK token, developed by the Ink Foundation, into its core trading platform. According to the announcement shared with Bitcoin.com News, the integration aims to enable new onchain use cases for Kraken users. The INK token, issued by a subsidiary of the Ink Foundation, is designed for use within the Ink L2 ecosystem.
Kraken co-CEO Arjun Sethi stated that the objective is to integrate “production grade onchain systems” across its offerings. He described the Ink L2 as a high-throughput, low-finality environment compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), suitable for trading and payments infrastructure. This technological choice allows Kraken to maintain the core performance of a centralized exchange while gradually introducing DeFi elements.
Airdrop Plan: Drops Program to Distribute INK to Eligible Users
As part of the integration, Kraken will distribute INK tokens to eligible active clients and ecosystem participants via its “Drops” airdrop program. However, the official announcement did not disclose specific eligibility criteria or distribution details. The rollout schedule and further airdrop details will be shared as each milestone is met, the announcement said. This phased disclosure strategy is common in the industry to maintain user anticipation while allowing flexibility for the project team.
Notably, this airdrop is not an isolated event. Several exchanges have recently launched their own L2 ecosystems and token airdrops to attract users. For instance, Coinbase's Base network has already built a sizable head start with a large developer community and user base. Ink L2's entry is seen as Kraken's critical move in the Layer 2 race, differentiating itself through a focus on high throughput and low latency to appeal to trading-oriented users.
Strategic Significance: Bridging CeFi and DeFi Toward Unified Capital Markets
The Ink Foundation Board called the partnership a “pivotal moment,” stating that Kraken's move helps bridge centralized finance (CeFi) and decentralized finance (DeFi). They indicated it marks a step towards unified capital markets accessible to anyone. This trend of convergence has become increasingly evident in 2025: traditional exchanges are blurring the lines between CEX and DEX by integrating L2s, self-custody wallets, and onchain yield products.
However, Ink L2 faces stiff competition. Coinbase's Base network, as an early mover, has established a vast developer community and user base. Other exchanges like Binance with opBNB and OKX with X Layer are also expanding rapidly. Kraken will need to leverage its brand trust, regulatory advantages, and Ink L2's technical features—such as high throughput and low latency—to carve out market share. Moreover, whether the token airdrop incentives can translate into long-term ecosystem retention remains an open question.
Overall, Kraken's integration of Ink L2 and the INK airdrop represents a carefully orchestrated strategic move that aligns with the industry trend of exchanges moving onchain, while using token incentives to rapidly acquire initial users. Future success will depend on the stability of the technology, the growth of ecosystem applications, and the evolving regulatory landscape.
