Crypto options firm STS Digital has rolled out a modular structured products platform, with Kraken as its first API integration partner, bringing predefined investment formats to retail users. The platform lets users configure products by selecting underlying assets, strike prices, maturities, and payout conditions, combining elements of options and fixed-income strategies similar to traditional structured notes.
“Structured products essentially package options and complex products into a simple investment that gives a defined payout at maturity,” said STS Digital CEO Maxime Seiler. In crypto, this typically involves using options to generate yield or provide partial downside protection. Examples include principal-protected notes that return a portion of capital in adverse markets, and yield enhancement strategies that generate income by selling options.
Kraken's Limited Rollout: Retail-First Approach
Kraken's integration is a curated subset of STS's full platform, offering a defined set of products and payoffs that retail clients can subscribe to. By leveraging STS's API, Kraken avoids building the underlying derivatives infrastructure in-house, speeding up time-to-market while relying on STS for pricing, execution, and risk management. This third-party infrastructure model is becoming common among exchanges seeking to expand product depth without operational complexity.
The exchange has begun a soft beta launch in select regions. The move aligns with Kraken's broader derivatives expansion, which recently included an agentic trading mobile app and a leading position in MiCA-regulated spot and perpetual liquidity.
Under the Hood: Betting on Cross-Asset Structured Products
STS Digital's platform builds on existing options infrastructure supporting over 400 cryptocurrencies across standard and complex derivatives. The firm plans to expand into tokenized equities, forex, and commodities, enabling cross-asset structured products on the same system. Regulated in Bermuda as a custodian, derivatives exchange, and market maker, STS can act as a principal dealer in options, managing pricing, execution, and risk internally.
While STS initially targets institutional clients — banks, family offices, high-net-worth investors — Kraken's retail version lowers the barrier. The success of structured products in crypto will depend on pricing transparency and performance across market cycles.
STS Digital recently raised $30 million in a funding round led by CMT Digital, with participation from Kraken's parent company Payward, to support structured products and broader derivatives infrastructure expansion.
As crypto markets mature, structured products represent a shift toward engineered financial instruments where yield generation and risk control are packaged into standardized offerings. The market is moving beyond spot and simple contracts, but whether retail traders can fully grasp these tools remains an open question.
