Japanese convenience store chain Lawson will run what was described as Japan’s first proof-of-concept trial for stablecoin payments directly at POS checkout counters on Aug. 6 and Aug. 17 at two stores in Tokyo. The test will support three stablecoins — JPYC, USDC and USDT — and process payments through HashPort Wallet and MetaMask. Settlement will be handled by PAYTREE, a multi-code payment gateway provided by Canal Payment Service, with no dedicated payment terminal required. The Aug. 6 trial will take place at the Takanawa Gateway City store using HashPort Wallet and JPYC. The Aug. 17 trial will be held at the Osaki Atrium store using MetaMask together with USDC, USDT and JPYC.
