Ledger has officially released the Nano S Plus hardware wallet, a major upgrade to the Nano S launched in 2016. The original Nano S sold nearly 4.5 million units but lacked essential features for Web3, including native support for NFTs and DeFi, leading to its retirement this year. The Nano S Plus is positioned as a comprehensive replacement.
Design and Build Upgrades
The Nano S Plus sports a minimalist curved design with a brushed stainless steel outer shell and inner plastic, resembling an upscale USB drive. Its 128x64 pixel monochrome display is significantly larger and sharper than the Nano S. The device weighs just 21 grams and measures 62.39 x 17.40 x 8.24 mm (twice the height of its predecessor). The two side buttons, while sometimes described as wobbly, are precise and easy to use. Currently available only in black, additional colors including Saffron Yellow, Matte Black, Jade Green, and Flamingo Pink are expected later this year. The packaging uses a gray-black theme with no anti-tamper seal (Ledger argues seals are easily counterfeited) and includes a Type-C cable, three seed phrase notepads, and a keychain with the new logo.
NFT and DeFi Integration
The Nano S Plus is among the first hardware wallets to support NFTs natively, allowing users to store, send, and receive tokens via the Ledger Live interface. Its built-in DeFi hub enables direct access to lending, staking, and yield farming services. The wallet runs on Ledger's BOLOS operating system, supporting over 100 third-party applications including MetaMask, Rainbow.me, and MyEtherWallet. Storage has been upgraded to 1.5 MB, enough for approximately 100 apps.
Security at its Core
The device uses a certified CC EAL5+ secure element (ST33K1M5) to protect against phishing and theft. Bluetooth is omitted to reduce attack vectors. Security features include a 4-8 digit PIN, 24-word recovery phrase, encrypted transaction confirmations, and password encryption. Ledger has maintained a strong security record with no known breaches. The same chip is CSPN certified by France's ANSSI. For second-hand units, a security check is recommended during setup.
Asset coverage and Compatibility
The Nano S Plus supports over 5,500 cryptocurrencies, with updates adding more regularly. The Ledger Live app (desktop and mobile) provides unified management for buying, exchanging, and tracking assets. Mobile version has slightly fewer features than desktop, but the interface remains beginner-friendly.
Pricing and availability
The Ledger Nano S Plus is priced at €79, making it more affordable than the Nano X (€149). It is available now on Ledger's website and authorized retailers.
