Libertyx has enabled cash-out on 5,000 Bitcoin ATMs in the U.S., tripling the number of machines where users can sell Bitcoin for cash. CEO Chris Yim explains the low-cost business model and observes strong adoption in rural areas with small trial purchases.

Libertyx, a major Bitcoin ATM operator in the United States, announced that 5,000 ATMs in its network now allow users to sell Bitcoin for cash. This move effectively triples the number of Bitcoin ATMs (BTMs) in the country that support two-way transactions—from fewer than 2,000 to approximately 7,000. CEO Chris Yim spoke with Bitcoin.com about the company's unique business model and emerging user trends.

Cash-Out Feature Expanded to 5,000 ATMs

Prior to this update, Libertyx focused on Bitcoin purchases through its vast retail network, which includes over 20,000 convenience stores such as 7-Eleven, CVS, and Rite Aid. Customers could buy Bitcoin with cash or debit cards, but selling was limited. Yim stated: “While it’s never been easier to buy Bitcoin, selling is another story. There are almost 15,000 Bitcoin ATMs across the U.S., but fewer than 2,000 allow consumers to sell Bitcoin for cash. Our ‘cash-out’ product deployed across 5,000 ATMs triples the number of Bitcoin ATMs where consumers can sell Bitcoin.”

He also confirmed that the waitlist for buying Bitcoin at chain retailers has been eliminated, and the company is extending its 0% conversion fee promotion—users only pay a flat $4.95 fee to the retailer.

Low-Cost Model Drives Lower Fees

Unlike traditional Bitcoin ATM operators that invest in expensive kiosks costing over $10,000 each, Libertyx leverages existing ATM hardware and retail point-of-sale infrastructure. This allows the company to serve smaller towns and underserved markets profitably. “The traditional BTM ROI doesn’t justify spending $10,000+ on a machine in a town of 15,000 people, but we’ve been able to tap into that underserved market with our ATM and chain retailer integrations,” Yim explained.

This cost advantage translates into lower fees: 1.5% when buying at CVS or Rite Aid using cash, and 8% when using a debit card at an ATM. In contrast, the industry average ranges between 12% and 20%.

User Behavior and Market Trends

Yim noted that with near-zero interest rates on bank deposits and volatility in stocks and jobs, consumers are increasingly interested in uncorrelated assets like Bitcoin. He described Bitcoin as having an “asymmetric lottery ticket return profile.” However, users are not risking their life savings. “Customers usually buy $20-50 initially to get comfortable with wallets and confirmation times, then they come back and buy more,” he said. “We continue to see increasing Bitcoin demand across the country, and particularly strong adoption in rural and suburban markets.”

The ability to cash out conveniently is expected to further stimulate usage, as users can now easily lock in profits or access cash when needed.

Not Listed on Coinatmradar

Despite its large network, Libertyx’s Bitcoin ATMs are not listed on Coinatmradar, the leading cryptocurrency ATM tracker. That’s because Coinatmradar only lists kiosks that exclusively sell cryptocurrencies and accept cash—not multi-function ATMs that also offer traditional banking services. Yim explained that the site offered to list them under “Other Services,” but that category is not searchable or displayed by default in the locator.

Nevertheless, Libertyx continues to expand its footprint and lower barriers to entry for Bitcoin. With the cash-out feature now live on 5,000 locations, the company is positioning itself as a key on-ramp and off-ramp for retail crypto users across the United States.
