The Lightning Network (LN) is a decentralized layer-2 protocol built on top of the Bitcoin blockchain. It allows instant, high-volume micropayments without delegating custody to third parties. By moving transactions off-chain into payment channels, LN retains Bitcoin's security while solving the main chain's slow confirmation times (up to one hour) and high fees. The network can theoretically handle 1 million transactions per second (TPS), outperforming Solana (65,000 TPS) and Visa (24,000 TPS). To use LN, users need a Lightning-enabled wallet. Popular mobile wallets include Muun, Wallet of Satoshi, Phoenix, and Cash App. Most are non-custodial, meaning users control their private keys, often with multisignature protection.
What is the Lightning Network
The Lightning Network creates two-party multisignature payment channels. When users deposit Bitcoin into a channel, they can transact instantly and arbitrarily many times without recording each transaction on the blockchain. Only the final channel balance is settled on-chain when the channel closes. This mechanism makes micropayments efficient and cheap, ideal for everyday purchases like coffee or tickets. LN was conceived by researchers Joseph Poon and Tadge Dryja in 2015; their white paper was published in January 2016. Elizabeth Stark co-founded Lightning Labs that same year to develop and maintain the network. The network is still considered experimental, so it's recommended not to store large amounts of Bitcoin in Lightning wallets.
How to Pay on the Lightning Network
To send a Lightning payment, open your Lightning wallet and tap "Send." Scan the recipient's QR code or manually enter their Lightning address. Confirm the amount and proceed. Receiving is just as simple: tap "Receive" and show your QR code or share your Lightning address. The network automatically routes the payment through existing channels, so you don't need a direct channel with each new counterparty. Scanning QR codes is faster and less error-prone than manual entry.
How to Fund Your Lightning Wallet with Bitcoin
Before making Lightning payments, you need Bitcoin in your wallet. Choose the Bitcoin base chain as the receiving network (for the first deposit), tap "Receive," and copy the address or scan the QR code. Send Bitcoin from an exchange or another wallet. On-chain transfers can take from minutes to hours. Once confirmed, your wallet opens a channel and you can start using Lightning. Remember: Lightning is still experimental, so keep only small amounts for everyday use.
Who Runs the Lightning Network
The Lightning Network is an open-source project initiated by Joseph Poon and Tadge Dryja. Lightning Labs, co-founded by Elizabeth Stark, released a beta version for developers in 2016. The project gained traction with increasing funding and interest, especially as its smart contract capabilities open doors for decentralized finance applications.
How to Receive Bitcoin on Cash App
Cash App supports Bitcoin deposits. Enable Bitcoin in the app: tap the "Money" tab → "Bitcoin" → "Deposit Bitcoin." Copy your wallet address (which changes after each deposit for privacy) and share it with the sender. You can deposit up to $10,000 worth of Bitcoin in any seven-day period. On-chain transfers may take hours.
How to Use Cash App Lightning Network
In October 2022, Cash App added Lightning support. To send: tap the "$" tab, select the QR scanner in the top left, scan a Lightning invoice QR code, and confirm. To receive: tap "Money" → "Bitcoin" → "Receive." Share the QR code or link with the sender. The sender doesn't need Cash App but must have a Lightning-enabled wallet.
Moving Funds with Lightning Addresses (LNURLs)
Lightning addresses were introduced in December 2022. They work like email addresses for Bitcoin, allowing anyone to send Bitcoin instantly on Lightning. Kraken implemented Lightning in March 2022, and Coinbase announced a partnership in April 2023. LNURLs simplify payments by eliminating QR codes: the sender just types the recipient's Lightning address, and the system generates an invoice automatically. Adoption is growing but still ongoing.
