Secure Digital Markets said it completed a $1 million Bitcoin transfer to crypto exchange Kraken through the Lightning Network on Jan. 28. The companies described it as the largest publicly reported Lightning payment so far, with the transfer settling almost instantly and at minimal cost.
The pilot was supported by Voltage’s enterprise Lightning infrastructure. Voltage provides Bitcoin payments and infrastructure services for institutional clients. According to SDM, the test was built to examine whether Lightning can handle high-value settlement between regulated counterparties, rather than remaining limited to smaller payment use cases.
Pilot tested institutional settlement over Lightning
SDM said the transaction showed how Lightning could be used for internal treasury movements, large-value settlements, and transfers between trading venues. The key point was speed. Instead of waiting through the delays tied to on-chain settlement, the payment was completed on a near-instant basis.
Mostafa Al-Mashita, co-founder and director of sales and trading at SDM, said moving $1 million to Kraken over Lightning marks a clear change in global settlement architecture. He added that the market has moved past the stage of questioning Bitcoin’s capacity for institutional use.
Kraken and Voltage point to rising institutional demand
Kraken has supported Lightning for retail payments for several years. The exchange said the transfer reflects increasing demand from institutional clients looking for faster settlement options. Calvin Leyon, Kraken’s head of on-chain, said milestones like this show what can happen when technology meets real demand, adding that faster settlement can expand Bitcoin’s utility at a global level.
Voltage founder and CEO Graham Krizek said the transfer highlights the maturity of the Lightning Network and its ability to satisfy enterprise requirements. Based on the details released around the pilot, the conversation around Lightning is no longer confined to small payments, but now includes institutional treasury operations and high-value venue-to-venue settlement.
