Loopring shut down its decentralized exchange effective June 28, 2026, ending trading services and taking its relayer offline. The team said the Ethereum-based platform was closed after limited adoption, LRC delistings across exchanges during 2026, and mounting pressure from zkEVM networks. After the shutdown, eligible user funds will be sent directly to associated Ethereum Layer 1 wallet addresses.
An early zkRollup project exits the DEX market
The announcement closes the DEX chapter for one of Ethereum’s earliest zkRollup projects. Loopring said it helped show that zero-knowledge proofs could be used to scale Ethereum. At the same time, the team acknowledged a core limitation in its architecture: it did not include a virtual machine. That mattered. Without it, the network could not deliver the same level of composability or support a wider set of payment use cases.
Loopring also pointed to business-side weaknesses. The team said it concentrated on engineering and did not build strong business development operations. Exchange delistings of LRC in 2026 added more strain, and the company said those pressures sped up the decision to discontinue the service. In its statement, Loopring described its specialized architecture as outdated compared with newer options, especially as zkEVM systems now offer full compatibility with Ethereum smart contracts.
Users will receive direct batch distributions
For fund returns, Loopring chose a direct distribution process instead of asking users to submit Merkle proofs. The team will first publish a full list of final balances, covering spot holdings and converted liquidity pool positions. All AMM positions will be automatically redeemed into their underlying assets, so users will not need to redeem LP tokens on their own.
Loopring then plans to upgrade the DEX smart contract. The updated contract will allow only team-controlled whitelisted addresses to move assets from Layer 2. Before transfers start, the project will open a two-week public review period so users can verify balances and report discrepancies. Once that window closes, batch transfers to linked Ethereum Layer 1 wallets will begin.
Only accounts above the $10 threshold qualify
According to Loopring, only accounts with at least $10 in final value will qualify for distribution, and the team will pay all gas fees tied to those transfers. It expects the process to finish within several weeks after distributions begin, with updates to be posted on X.
