Seattle-based Bitcoin mining software provider Luxor Technology has announced the expansion of its proprietary firmware LuxOS to support MicroBT's Whatsminer M50 series. Concurrently, MicroBT, through its investment arm Inflection Technology Limited (ITL), has signed a preliminary agreement including a $100 million hardware purchase commitment and a strategic investment in Luxor.
LuxOS Expansion to Whatsminer M50 Series
According to the official announcement, LuxOS is currently deployed on over 300,000 Bitcoin mining machines worldwide. The expansion brings the same firmware infrastructure to Whatsminer miners, which represent a significant share of global Bitcoin hashrate. Initial support covers select models in the M50 series, with plans to extend to additional models over time.
Luxor stated that it is working directly with a group of mining partners to deploy the firmware in phases, ensuring deployment quality. The full list of supported models is available at docs.luxor.tech.
$100M Hardware Commitment and Strategic Investment
MicroBT's ITL signed a preliminary agreement with Luxor, including a strategic investment and a $100 million hardware purchase commitment. Luxor CEO Lauren Lin commented: “Customers have been requesting Whatsminer firmware support for years. We’ve now launched a product that will deliver significant profitability and usability benefits. We welcome MicroBT as a strategic investor.”
Dr. Yang, CEO and co-founder of MicroBT, called Luxor a “trusted global partner” and stated that MicroBT is strategically positioned to support Luxor's continued growth through the hardware partnership.
Power Targeting and Fast Recovery Features
Whatsminer miners running LuxOS gain access to advanced features including Power Targeting, Advanced Thermal Management, Safe and Fast Power Down, and faster boot times. Power Targeting delivers consistent performance per individual miner, making infrastructure planning more predictable when scaling.
When operators adjust power targets, LuxOS completes the transition within 30 to 60 seconds while miners continue hashing at higher rates, recovering hashrate that would otherwise be wasted during transitions. Additionally, LuxOS shortens recovery time after power reduction events, allowing miners to reach maximum power faster and minimizing lost hashrate each time the fleet curtails and reboots.
Industry Impact and Future Outlook
This deal further ties together two major players in the crypto mining industry. MicroBT manufactures machines powering a large portion of the global Bitcoin network, while Luxor has developed software and financial tools relied upon by large-scale operators. Miners using LuxOS can also access Luxor's broader ecosystem including a Bitcoin mining pool, hashrate derivatives, energy services, and fleet management platform Luxor Commander. Commander includes Intelligent Miner, a tool that adjusts power settings in real-time based on hash price and energy price to maintain maximum fleet profitability.
