Lyft has partnered with Hivemapper, a Solana-based DePIN project, via Bee Maps to capture real-time street-level mapping data for navigation and future autonomous driving. The collaboration began in 2024; Hivemapper has mapped over 500 million kilometers.

Lyft, the ride-hailing giant with over 2 million drivers across the U.S. and Canada, has officially adopted Hivemapper, a decentralized physical infrastructure network (DePIN) built on Solana, to refresh its street-level map data. The integration is facilitated through Bee Maps, a solutions provider that leverages Hivemapper’s decentralized mapping software.

Partnership Details and Background

According to a blog post, the partnership between Lyft and Bee Maps was recently announced but has been in development since 2024, involving close coordination among mapping engineering teams in both the U.S. and Europe. Bee Maps uses Hivemapper’s network to continuously capture the latest street-level changes—including temporary detours, new signage, road features, and construction details—which traditional mapping services struggle to keep up with.

Hivemapper highlighted the significance of this move: “The best ride-hailing marketplaces want the freshest map data. We’re proud to see Lyft relying on our network to help build and maintain its maps.” As of May 8, 2025, Hivemapper’s network has surpassed 500 million kilometers mapped since its inception.

Technical Advantages and Future Applications

Ariel Seidman, co-founder and CEO of Bee Maps, stated that Lyft’s decision underscores how decentralized mapping has overtaken outdated solutions. “Lyft recognized that old-school mapping couldn’t keep up with the real world. For mobility to work and for autonomy to become reality, maps can’t be an afterthought—they need to be crowdsourced, live, accurate, and open,” Seidman said.

Beyond improving current ride-hailing navigation, Lyft may be preparing to launch autonomous driving solutions that rely on these dynamic, high-definition maps. The real-time data from Hivemapper allows Lyft to optimize routes, predict traffic conditions, and provide environmental awareness for self-driving vehicles.

Industry Impact

This partnership further validates the real-world commercial value of DePIN projects within the Solana ecosystem. Following Helium’s deal with AT&T to serve U.S. customers, Lyft’s adoption of Hivemapper signals a shift from theoretical concepts to large-scale enterprise deployment. Decentralized infrastructure is proving its ability to deliver fresh, accurate data at scale, challenging traditional centralized mapping providers.
