MARA Holdings announced the formation of the MARA Foundation during the Bitcoin 2026 conference in Las Vegas, laying out a roadmap to bolster Bitcoin's long-term resilience. The nonprofit entity concentrates on five core areas: long-term security, open-source development, self-custody systems, policy advocacy, and education for users, developers, and policymakers. CEO Fred Thiel described the move as a natural extension of MARA's responsibility beyond mining.
Quantum Computing Threats Under Review
The foundation specifically flagged quantum computing risks as a key research direction. As quantum technology advances, existing elliptic curve signatures used in Bitcoin may become vulnerable. MARA intends to fund early-stage research to protect the network's infrastructure and ensure its resilience across decades.
$100K Community Grant Program Opens
To mark the launch, the foundation introduced a $100,000 grant to be decided by community vote. Three shortlisted organizations include SateNet (connectivity), the 256 Foundation (mining tools), and Libreria de Satoshi (technical education). Online and on-site voting at the event runs until 3:00 PM PST on April 29. The winner will be announced after the tally closes, according to MARA.
Parallel Strategic Shifts at Corporate Level
MARA Holdings has been executing significant financial and operational changes. In March, the company sold 15,133 BTC for roughly $1.1 billion. It used the proceeds to repurchase $1 billion in convertible notes, cutting debt by about 30%. The firm also reduced its workforce by approximately 15%. Separately, MARA acquired a majority stake in Exaion to enter data infrastructure, and signed a deal with Starwood to convert mining capacity into AI processing — signaling a pivot beyond pure Bitcoin mining toward diversified computing services.
