Billionaire investor, Shark Tank co-host, and owner of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks, Mark Cuban, recently shared his cryptocurrency investment strategy and opinions during an episode of The Delphi Podcast. Cuban revealed that his personal crypto portfolio is allocated as follows: 60% Bitcoin (BTC), 30% Ethereum (ETH), and the remaining 10% spread across smaller-cap cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoin: A Superior Store of Value, Not a Currency

Cuban reiterated his longstanding view that Bitcoin is fundamentally a store of value rather than a medium of exchange. “Back in 2012, people said Bitcoin was a currency. I thought, ‘It’s just not going to work.’ But I always said it was a store of value — if you can get people to believe it’s a better alternative to gold because of its algorithmic scarcity, the price will go up,” Cuban explained. He emphasized that Bitcoin’s role as digital gold is its core strength, and that’s why he continues to hold it without selling.

The investor noted that while Bitcoin enjoys strong narrative-driven demand, it lacks the programmability needed to function as a true currency. “It’s more of a religion than a solution to any problem,” he had stated in late 2020, though he later praised Bitcoin holders for their conviction.

Ethereum: The ‘True Currency’ Candidate

Cuban’s enthusiasm for Ethereum stands in sharp contrast to his measured view of Bitcoin. “I think Ethereum is the closest we have to a true currency,” he declared. The key differentiator, according to Cuban, is Ethereum’s support for smart contracts, which enabled DeFi and NFTs. “What really changed everything was smart contracts. They created DeFi and NFTs. That’s what changed the game. That’s what got me excited. It’s a lot like the early internet,” he said.

He described Ethereum as “adaptable over time” due to the open development community building on top of it. “That is more life-like. I have a lot of Ethereum. I wish I had bought it sooner, but I started buying it four years ago simply because I think it’s the closest we have to a true currency.” Cuban also highlighted Ethereum’s flexibility in enabling decentralized applications (dApps) and tokenized assets, making it a more dynamic platform than Bitcoin.

The Remaining 10%: Exploration and Fun

Cuban declined to name the specific altcoins in his remaining 10% allocation, explaining that he treats them as experiments rather than core investments. “There’s none that I’m just all in on, other than Bitcoin and Ethereum, that I look at as being an equivalent investment. I buy some tokens for fun, some for the experience — just because I want to learn.” He added that owning small positions allows him to test new technologies and gain firsthand knowledge of emerging projects.

The investor also acknowledged past skepticism toward crypto, including his 2020 comment calling Bitcoin “more religion than solution.” However, his recent actions — increasing his Ethereum position and publicly defending Bitcoin against gold proponents — signal a significant shift in his confidence. Cuban concluded by noting that while the crypto space remains volatile, he believes Ethereum’s programmability gives it the best chance of evolving into a widely used medium of exchange.
