Mastercard and Chainlink said they are rolling out a system designed to let roughly 3.5 billion Mastercard cardholders buy crypto directly onchain. The setup ties traditional card payments to decentralized finance infrastructure, moving fiat through a conversion process before trades are executed onchain. The flow also brings in zerohash, Swapper Finance, Shift4 Payments, and XSwap, with decentralized liquidity sourced through the Uniswap protocol.
How the payment flow reaches onchain execution
According to Chainlink, the system combines its interoperability infrastructure with Mastercard’s global payments network. A cardholder starts with a standard card payment, but the transaction then moves through several service layers before reaching onchain settlement. What looks simple at the front end depends on card processing, fiat-to-crypto conversion, routing, and decentralized trade execution underneath.
Shift4 Payments handles card processing, while zerohash provides fiat conversion and liquidity services tied to smart contract execution. Swapper Finance runs the application-layer experience. It uses XSwap, part of the Chainlink ecosystem, to connect users to decentralized exchanges, where liquidity can be sourced from protocols such as Uniswap and trades can be completed directly onchain after the fiat leg is converted.
What each company is contributing
Chainlink said the collaboration is built to connect traditional payment rails with DeFi systems through standardized interoperability tools spanning several financial layers. Mastercard contributes access to its global base of cardholders and payment infrastructure. Chainlink provides the data and communication framework needed for blockchain-side execution. Together, those components allow a fiat payment to trigger an onchain crypto transaction.
zerohash CEO Edward Woodford said the infrastructure abstracts away smart contract complexity while supporting compliant onboarding and transaction execution across both crypto and fiat networks. Uniswap Labs Head of Business Development Drew Turchin described the protocol’s role as part of decentralized market infrastructure and said it continues to support developer-built financial tools across onchain markets.
Focus on simpler access to digital assets
Chainlink Co-Founder Sergey Nazarov said the integration connects traditional payments with decentralized exchanges and gives billions of Mastercard users a route into onchain trading environments. Mastercard executive vice president Raj Dhamodharan said users are looking for simpler access to digital assets, and framed the partnership around linking onchain commerce with offchain transactions through existing payment systems.
The structure combines payment processing, liquidity provision, and decentralized exchange execution in one transaction path. It also pairs regulated onboarding systems with decentralized liquidity pools, aiming to reduce friction for users entering digital asset markets and widen access to onchain crypto purchases at a global scale.
