MediaTek gave investors a stronger fourth-quarter outlook than the market had expected and said it has formally secured a second cloud ASIC customer, adding a new data point to its longer-term custom chip push.
At its investor meeting, the chip designer said fourth-quarter revenue is expected to reach NT$210.1 billion to NT$221.8 billion, which would represent quarter-over-quarter growth of 25% to 32%. MediaTek said the outlook is being supported by AI PCs, broader volume growth across smart terminal devices, and shipments of flagship chips. It also said full-year U.S. dollar revenue will exceed its earlier target of high-single-digit growth.
CEO says ASIC schedule remains on track
During the analyst Q&A session, attention centered on the progress of AI cloud accelerator chips. CEO Rick Tsai said reports of delays were not accurate and that development is proceeding as planned.
Tsai said the ASIC product is made up of multiple dies, with some of those dies already having completed tape-out. He added that the larger and more complex dies are taking several more weeks, but still fall within the company’s original schedule and remain on track.
On advanced packaging, MediaTek said it is working closely with a U.S. IDM and substrate supply chain partners. Tsai said the company has sufficient experience and confidence to raise yield rates quickly.
Second cloud ASIC customer confirmed
Tsai also formally announced that MediaTek has signed a second cloud ASIC customer that he described as 「brand new and different」. The project has already been fully launched and is expected to begin contributing recognized revenue in 2028.
The company kept its long-term target for ASIC revenue in 2027 at US$16 billion. It also said the business is expected to maintain strong expansion momentum in 2028.
