Meme coins posted a sharp rebound after the holiday period, with Santiment data showing the sector’s total market capitalization climbing above $45.3 billion. That marks a 20.8% increase in one week. PEPE led the move with a 54% gain, matched by USELESS at 54%, followed by MOG at 38%, DOG at 36%, BONK at 34%, and FLOKI at 33%. The rally picked up just days after post-Christmas fear, uncertainty, and doubt hit retail traders, pointing to a renewed appetite for higher-risk trades.
Large-cap meme tokens take the lead
Jake Kennis, senior research analyst at Nansen, said the early-year rotation into large-cap meme tokens may show traders are positioning for upside after months of consolidation. He added that meme coins were among the sectors hit hardest after the October 10, 2025 liquidation. Even with the latest recovery, the group still trails Bitcoin. PEPE and DOGE remain down 79.8% and 81% from their all-time highs, which keeps the recent bounce in perspective.
Micro-cap names draw speculative attention again
Speculative interest has also returned to smaller meme tokens. Meme Detective pointed to WhiteWhale as an example, saying the token sat near a $3,000 market cap for three months before rising to $70 million in just two weeks. His view was clear: traders who can identify coins with strong narratives after heavy selloffs may find the best setups in undervalued names and hold through narrative-driven market shifts. The volatility is extreme. The interest is still there.
ETF talk and DOGE accumulation add momentum
Institutional speculation is also shaping sentiment. Neil Staunton, CEO of Superset, said discussion around memecoin ETFs in 2026 is gaining traction. In his view, even the idea that meme tokens could one day be wrapped in institutional products can create a narrative that makes them look investable to a wider market. Jordan Jefferson, founder of DogeOS, said PEPE’s surge was partly driven by millions of dollars in short liquidations. He also said DOGE saw more than 1 billion tokens accumulated over the past month, a signal that has drawn attention from both retail and institutional participants.
