New data from market research firm Sensor Tower shows Meta’s personal AI agent Muse opened with a much stronger early retention curve than ChatGPT, but the gap did not last. Investor Deedy Das shared figures showing Muse reached 73.3% day-two retention, compared with 41.3% for ChatGPT, a lead of 32 percentage points. By day 7, Muse was still holding above 30%, but ChatGPT gradually closed the gap and moved ahead between day 8 and day 9. By day 14, Muse had fallen to 22.5%, while ChatGPT stood at 26.8%. Even so, Muse remained above Threads at 21.2%, Google Maps at 18.5%, and Grok Bot at 10.4% over the same period. Muse launched on Sept. 8, and Sensor Tower had previously estimated that it crossed 5 million downloads in just 22 days, making it one of the fastest-growing consumer AI apps in recent months. The retention dataset covers users who newly installed mobile apps in September 2026 across iOS and Android. Sensor Tower also noted that Muse was mainly available in the U.S. and Canada at the time, while ChatGPT had broader market coverage, meaning the two user bases were not directly identical.

Meta’s personal AI agent Muse started with a stronger retention profile than ChatGPT, according to the latest data from market research firm Sensor Tower, but that lead faded within days.

Figures shared by investor Deedy Das show Muse recorded 73.3% day-two retention, well above ChatGPT’s 41.3%, a gap of 32 percentage points.

Muse led early before ChatGPT caught up

Muse’s advantage did not hold for long. By day 7, its retention rate was still above 30%, but ChatGPT gradually narrowed the gap and overtook it between day 8 and day 9.

By day 14, Muse’s retention had dropped to 22.5%, while ChatGPT remained at 26.8%.

Still ahead of several other apps at day 14

Even after losing the lead to ChatGPT, Muse still ranked above several other apps over the same period. Its day-14 retention was higher than Threads at 21.2%, Google Maps at 18.5%, and Grok Bot at 10.4%.

Launch date and download pace

Muse launched on Sept. 8. Sensor Tower had previously estimated that the app surpassed 5 million downloads in just 22 days, making it one of the fastest-growing consumer AI apps in recent months.

Meta also pushed Muse heavily through its own platforms, including Facebook and Instagram.

What the dataset covers

The retention figures cover users who newly installed mobile apps in September 2026 across iOS and Android.

Sensor Tower also noted that Muse was mainly available in the United States and Canada at the time, while ChatGPT had broader market coverage, so the two user groups were not fully comparable.
