MetaMask users reported widespread connection issues after Infura, the wallet’s default infrastructure endpoint, suffered what was described as a “major outage.” According to the report, Infura’s status page showed 10 components in major outage and another five components in partial outage, disrupting access for wallets and applications that rely on its RPC services.

Default infrastructure dependency exposed

MetaMask acknowledged the issue on social media, saying that users experiencing problems were likely being affected by the outage Infura was actively trying to resolve. Infura also apologized publicly, stating that its team was fully engaged in fixing the incident. User reactions quickly spread across social platforms and Reddit, where many asked whether MetaMask itself was down.

Because MetaMask uses Infura as a default endpoint, the service disruption created immediate friction for users trying to access Web3 accounts or interact with blockchain-based applications. The incident also revived criticism around infrastructure concentration in Web3. Some users argued that if MetaMask continues to rely on Infura by default, it should offer automatic switching to a set of vetted backup endpoints to reduce the impact of a single provider failure.

Broader warnings across Web3

The disruption was not limited to MetaMask announcements. Other DeFi projects, companies, and NFT marketplaces issued warnings as well. Looksrare, for example, said that Infura’s major outage was affecting products such as MetaMask that depend on its RPC services, and that wallet issues users were seeing were likely related.

The report added that some users turned to alternative endpoint solutions to regain access to their Web3 accounts during the incident. By the time of writing, Infura’s status page indicated that systems were operational. Even so, the episode highlighted a key weakness in the ecosystem: a wallet may not be fully offline, but if its default infrastructure layer fails, the user experience can still be severely disrupted.
