On June 8, 2026, Consensys released the MetaMask Agent Wallet, a dedicated self-custodial account designed for AI agents. The wallet enables AI frameworks to autonomously execute swaps, trade perpetual futures, enter prediction markets, and manage liquidity pool positions across 25+ EVM chains and Hyperliquid—without compromising user control over funds.
Architecture: AI Gets Its Own Account, Users Set Boundaries
The Agent Wallet assigns a separate account for the AI, isolated from the user's main account. Before activation, users configure spending limits per session, protocol allowlists specifying which smart contracts can be touched, and a risk profile defining aggressiveness. Once set, the AI operates autonomously within those boundaries. The wallet connects via command-line interface, targeting developers first; a full UI version is slated for summer 2026. Out-of-the-box support covers major AI frameworks including OpenAI Codex, Claude Code, Nous Research Hermes Agent, and Cursor.
Security: Guard Mode vs Beast Mode
Every transaction passes through MetaMask's full security stack, including Transaction Shield powered by Blockaid, which simulates and screens each on-chain action before execution. Safe transactions are processed automatically; flagged malicious ones require manual approval. Financial coverage via MetaMask's Transaction Protection plan backs verified-safe transactions up to $10,000.
Two operating modes balance speed and friction. Guard Mode (default) triggers two-factor authentication on every transaction flagged as risky or outside policy, suitable for users wanting oversight. Beast Mode (opt-in) triggers 2FA only on malicious flags, reducing interruptions for experienced DeFi traders. In both modes, private keys remain isolated via Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) hardware-level protection; users can export their recovery phrase anytime.
Zhen Yu Tong, Consensys Senior Director of Product, told Decrypt: “For agents, this really is day one, but the infrastructure decision can't be put off, because agents are already working with real money, and most of them are doing it wrong.” He noted that some projects give agents direct private key access, creating serious unnecessary risk.
Early Access and Market Context
The launch cohort is deliberately small at 200 spots. Selected participants receive free access, direct contact with the build team, and influence over the product roadmap. General availability arrives this summer, targeting MetaMask's 100 million+ user base. The AI agent market is projected to grow from $5.4 billion in 2024 to $236 billion by 2034, with exchanges like Gemini already letting users connect AI bots. Consensys enters a race already underway.
At launch, the security pipeline supports nine chains: Ethereum, Linea, Arbitrum, Avalanche, Optimism, and Base among others, with Hyperliquid for perpetuals. Coverage expands to 25+ EVM chains at general availability.
