Metaplanet, widely recognized as Japan’s leading Bitcoin treasury firm, has expanded its holdings once again. The company purchased an additional 1,088 BTC for approximately ¥16.89 billion, paying an average of ¥15,519,019 per Bitcoin. After this latest acquisition, Metaplanet’s total Bitcoin holdings reached 8,888 BTC. On a cumulative basis, the company has spent ¥122.27 billion to build this position, with an overall average purchase price of ¥13,756,658 per BTC.
This is more than a simple treasury allocation update. Metaplanet has increasingly built its identity around Bitcoin accumulation as a central corporate strategy. Its financing activity, performance metrics, and investor communications all point in the same direction: the company wants the market to evaluate it not only as an operating business, but also as a listed vehicle for Bitcoin exposure. That positioning has made it especially relevant to investors looking for indirect BTC exposure through the Tokyo stock market.
Latest Bitcoin Purchase and Total Treasury Position
The newly acquired 1,088 BTC pushed Metaplanet’s total holdings to 8,888 BTC, a number that is both symbolically memorable and strategically significant. The company’s total acquisition cost now stands at ¥122.27 billion, and its blended average cost basis is ¥13,756,658 per Bitcoin. Compared with the latest purchase price of ¥15,519,019, the company is clearly still buying at elevated market levels rather than waiting for a major pullback.
That matters because it highlights the nature of Metaplanet’s approach. This is not a tactical trading program focused on timing short-term price moves. Instead, it is a long-duration treasury strategy built around steady Bitcoin accumulation. For companies pursuing a Bitcoin-on-the-balance-sheet model, the central question is not simply whether they bought at the lowest possible price, but whether they can keep increasing their Bitcoin reserves in a way that shareholders see as accretive over time.
BTC Yield and Why Metaplanet Uses It
Metaplanet continues to report results using its proprietary BTC Yield metric, a key performance indicator designed to measure Bitcoin accumulation on a per-share basis. Rather than focusing only on the company’s headline BTC balance, this metric attempts to show whether shareholders are gaining more Bitcoin exposure relative to the share count. As of June 2, 2025, the company reported a quarter-to-date BTC Yield of 66.3%.
The prior three quarters also showed large and highly visible changes in this KPI. According to the company, previous quarter-to-date BTC Yield figures were 95.6%, 309.8%, and 41.7%. Those numbers suggest that Metaplanet has been aggressively increasing the amount of Bitcoin represented by each share, or at least framing its strategy in those terms for investors. For a public company that regularly accesses capital markets, this metric is important because it tries to answer a core shareholder concern: whether financing activity is actually improving Bitcoin exposure per share or merely increasing the share count.
Metaplanet also disclosed that its total BTC Gain for Q2 2025 reached 2,684 BTC. Using a reference Bitcoin price of ¥15.10 million, that translates into roughly ¥40.54 billion in value. This gives investors another way to interpret treasury growth, particularly in a period when Bitcoin prices remain high and corporate accumulation narratives are attracting attention globally.
How Capital Markets Activity Supports the Bitcoin Strategy
Since January 28, 2025, Metaplanet has aligned its capital markets activity closely with its Bitcoin acquisition plan. The company executed a series of zero-coupon, non-interest-bearing bond issuances and 0% discount stock acquisition rights to EVO FUND. Through these transactions, it raised more than ¥35 billion and USD 121 million.
The stated use of proceeds was straightforward: Bitcoin purchases and bond redemptions. In other words, Metaplanet is not merely using external financing for broad corporate expansion. It is deliberately channeling capital market funding into an expanding Bitcoin treasury. This makes the company look less like a conventional operating firm with incidental crypto exposure and more like a publicly listed Bitcoin accumulation vehicle with operating-business support around it.
That structure also increases sensitivity to market conditions. When Bitcoin prices are rising and investors reward Bitcoin-linked equity stories, a company like Metaplanet may find it easier to raise capital and continue buying BTC. When Bitcoin weakens or investor appetite cools, the same model can become harder to sustain. The strength of the strategy therefore depends not only on treasury execution, but also on the market’s willingness to keep valuing listed Bitcoin exposure at a premium.
Q1 FY2025 Financial Performance and Balance Sheet Effects
Metaplanet said that Q1 FY2025 delivered its strongest financial results to date. Revenue rose 8% quarter over quarter to ¥877 million, while operating profit increased 11% to ¥593 million. Net income climbed sharply to ¥5.0 billion, giving the company a much stronger earnings profile than many investors may have expected from a Bitcoin-focused treasury story.
Beyond the income statement, the balance sheet also benefited from Bitcoin-related valuation gains. The company reported ¥13.5 billion in unrealized gains from its Bitcoin holdings. While unrealized gains are not the same as realized cash profit, they still matter significantly for market perception. They can improve confidence in the company’s financial position, support the broader treasury narrative, and reinforce the idea that Bitcoin accumulation has strengthened the firm rather than weakened it.
For that reason, Metaplanet can no longer be evaluated through traditional corporate metrics alone. Revenue and operating profit still matter, but investors also need to examine the scale of Bitcoin holdings, the average cost basis, the mark-to-market impact, and the extent to which treasury gains are driving headline financial performance. In practice, the company sits somewhere between a conventional listed business and a Bitcoin-linked financial vehicle.
Bitcoin Price Sensitivity and Comparison With Strategy
The article notes that Bitcoin briefly dipped at the end of March, causing a valuation loss of about ¥7.4 billion for Metaplanet. However, that setback was quickly reversed as BTC moved to fresh record highs. This rapid recovery illustrates how tightly the company’s market appeal is linked to Bitcoin price action. When BTC rises, Metaplanet’s treasury value strengthens, balance-sheet optics improve, and investors become more likely to treat the stock as a proxy for Bitcoin exposure.
That is a major reason why many investors now use Metaplanet as an indirect Bitcoin vehicle on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. For market participants who cannot or do not want to hold BTC directly, Bitcoin treasury stocks can serve as a familiar securities-based alternative. They are not the same as owning on-chain Bitcoin, but they often trade on a related narrative: listed equity as a wrapper for BTC exposure.
At the same time, Strategy continued to expand its own position. The company acquired another 705 BTC for about $75 million, further solidifying its status as the largest corporate Bitcoin holder. According to its SEC filing dated June 2, Strategy purchased the Bitcoin at an average price of $106,495 per BTC between May 26 and June 1, bringing its total holdings to 580,955 BTC.
That acquisition was funded through the sale of some preferred shares under an at-the-market (ATM) equity offering. Together, the actions of Metaplanet and Strategy point to the same broader development: more public companies are embracing Bitcoin treasury strategies and using debt, equity, or hybrid financing tools to expand their BTC reserves. As this model spreads, investors are likely to pay closer attention not only to how much Bitcoin these firms hold, but also to how efficiently they finance and scale that exposure.
