MicroStrategy (Strategy Inc.), the largest corporate bitcoin holder, began 2026 with another purchase. In a filing on Jan 5, the company disclosed that it acquired 1,283 BTC between Jan 1 and Jan 4 for approximately $116 million, at an average price of $90,391 per coin (including fees). This brings total bitcoin holdings to 673,783 BTC, with an aggregate cost of about $50.55 billion and an average cost basis of $75,026 per BTC.

New Year Bitcoin Purchase Details

The four-day buying spree came at a price roughly 20% above MicroStrategy's historical average. While the company did not break down daily volumes, the pace equates to roughly 320 BTC per day. Compared to a 10,000-BTC buy in late December 2025, this is a smaller move, yet it signals continued accumulation at the start of the year.

Funding via Common Stock ATM

The purchase was funded through MicroStrategy's at-the-market (ATM) equity offering program. Between Jan 1 and Jan 4, the company issued 735,000 shares of MSTR common stock, raising net proceeds of approximately $116.3 million. No preferred stock (STRF, STRC, STRK, STRD) was issued during this period, but those shelves remain largely unused. As of Jan 4, residual ATM capacity included MSTR common stock at roughly $11.39 billion, plus preferred stock totaling about $29.91 billion.

USD Reserve at $2.25 Billion

MicroStrategy also updated its USD Reserve, which stood at roughly $2.25 billion as of Jan 4. The reserve is used to pay preferred dividends and service outstanding debt. The company said the size and usage will be adjusted flexibly based on market conditions and liquidity needs, without a stated floor.

Accelerated Equity Issuance

In the previous week (Dec 29-31, 2025), MicroStrategy had already raised about $195.9 million by issuing 1.256 million common shares. Combined, the company raised roughly $312 million in new equity within eight days, converting about 37% of that into bitcoin immediately. The market now watches whether MSTR's stock price will track bitcoin's moves and if the company will tap its preferred stock shelf later.
