Nasdaq-listed business intelligence firm MicroStrategy (NASDAQ: MSTR) has made its third large-scale Bitcoin purchase, now holding approximately 40,824 bitcoins valued at over $780 million at current market prices.

Third Bitcoin Acquisition

MicroStrategy CEO Michael Saylor announced on Friday that the company acquired roughly 2,574 bitcoins for $50 million in cash, at an average price of approximately $19,427 per bitcoin. The purchase was executed in accordance with the company's Treasury Reserve Policy and facilitated by Coinbase. The firm also filed a Form 8-K with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), confirming total holdings of about 40,824 bitcoins acquired at an aggregate purchase price of $475 million, inclusive of fees and expenses.

With Bitcoin currently trading around $19,153, MicroStrategy's cryptocurrency treasury is worth more than $780 million, representing a substantial unrealized gain over its total acquisition cost.

Three Tranches of Accumulation

This marks the third major Bitcoin purchase by MicroStrategy since August 2020. The company initially bought 21,454 bitcoins for $250 million in August, followed by an additional 16,796 bitcoins for $175 million in September. Combined, these three purchases total 40,824 bitcoins at an average cost of roughly $11,634 per coin. Coinbase served as the execution platform for all transactions.

MicroStrategy's aggressive Bitcoin accumulation strategy has drawn significant attention from the investment community. As a multi-billion-dollar Nasdaq-listed firm, its decision to adopt Bitcoin as a primary treasury reserve asset is widely seen as a watershed moment for institutional cryptocurrency adoption.

Saylor's Personal Commitment

Michael Saylor has become one of Bitcoin's most vocal advocates since the company's first purchase. He frequently appears on interviews and podcasts explaining why he believes Bitcoin is the best store of value—far superior to gold. Notably, Saylor revealed in October that he personally holds 17,732 bitcoins, acquired at an average price of $9,882 each, demonstrating his strong conviction in the asset.

The company's continued buying spree has inspired other publicly traded firms, such as Square and Galaxy Digital, to allocate part of their treasuries to Bitcoin. Analysts suggest that MicroStrategy's example could encourage more corporations to consider Bitcoin as a hedge against inflation and a long-term value reserve.

As of press time, Bitcoin was trading above $19,000, with year-to-date gains exceeding 200%. MicroStrategy's Bitcoin holdings have appreciated more than 60% from their average cost, validating the company's bold treasury strategy.
