Mintlayer, a Bitcoin Layer 2 sidechain project, has announced the release of version 0.6.0, now live on its testnet and set to migrate to mainnet soon. The standout feature of this release is the implementation of native Bitcoin cross-chain atomic swaps using Hash Time Locked Contracts (HTLCs), enabling direct, decentralized exchanges between Bitcoin and Mintlayer without intermediaries.

Key Updates in Version 0.6.0

According to the official announcement, the update brings three major improvements:

  • Native Bitcoin Atomic Swaps: HTLC support for Bitcoin-Mintlayer swaps ensures secure, trustless exchange, eliminating counterparty risk.
  • Enhanced Atomic Swap Capabilities: ANYONECANTAKE support for Mintlayer-internal swaps increases flexibility for peer-to-peer transactions within the ecosystem.
  • Trezor Custom Firmware Support: Integration with hardware wallets to bolster user asset security.

Understanding Atomic Swaps

Atomic swaps leverage HTLCs to guarantee that a transaction either completes fully or reverts entirely, preventing fraud or partial execution. Mintlayer's implementation ensures users retain full control of their assets throughout the process, eliminating the need for centralized custodians.

Roadmap: ZK Thunder Network

Mintlayer also revealed that its ZK Thunder Network, developed in partnership with Salus, is nearing completion. This EVM-compatible Layer 3 scaling solution will build on Layer 2 security to introduce enhanced scalability and functionality for Bitcoin, making it more accessible for developers and dApp builders.

About Mintlayer

Mintlayer aims to enhance Bitcoin's capabilities through a Layer 2 sidechain that supports native cross-chain swaps, smart contracts, and real-world asset tokenization. Inspired by Bitcoin's security model, the platform also offers a SaaS solution for institutions to deploy tokenized assets with built-in compliance features.

With version 0.6.0 nearly completing Mintlayer's original vision, the team plans to launch a new ecosystem grant program in the coming weeks, funding projects building exclusively on or integrating with Mintlayer.
