Mintlayer, a Bitcoin Layer 2 sidechain, has announced the release of version 0.6.0, a major upgrade that brings native Bitcoin cross-chain Atomic Swaps to its testnet. The update is a crucial step toward completing the platform's original vision of a decentralized, scalable Bitcoin extension.

Native Bitcoin Atomic Swaps via HTLC

Version 0.6.0 introduces Hash Time Locked Contracts (HTLCs) for Bitcoin-Mintlayer swaps, enabling secure, trustless peer-to-peer exchanges without intermediaries. Atomic Swaps ensure that both parties fulfill their obligations within a specified timeframe; otherwise, the transaction is automatically canceled, mitigating fraud. The update also includes ANYONECANTAKE support for Mintlayer-Mintlayer swaps, boosting flexibility within the ecosystem.

Enhanced Security with Trezor Integration

To strengthen user asset protection, Mintlayer has integrated Trezor custom firmware, allowing hardware wallet users to execute atomic swaps and smart contracts directly from the device. This feature is particularly appealing for institutional clients requiring high-grade security.

Road to ZK Thunder Network

Looking ahead, Mintlayer is building the ZK Thunder Network in partnership with Salus. This EVM-compatible Layer 3 scaling solution will leverage Mintlayer's Layer 2 security while introducing significant scalability and programmability to Bitcoin. It aims to support real-world asset tokenization and sophisticated decentralized applications.

About Mintlayer and Ecosystem Grants

Mintlayer enhances Bitcoin's capabilities through its Layer 2 sidechain, offering native cross-chain swaps, smart contracts, and asset tokenization within a decentralized framework. Institutions can use its SaaS platform to deploy tokenized real-world assets with built-in compliance. The team plans to unveil a new ecosystem grant program in the coming weeks to fund projects building on Mintlayer.

With v0.6.0, Mintlayer demonstrates that Bitcoin can support native cross-chain interoperability without compromising security. As the platform moves toward mainnet and the ZK Thunder Network, the Bitcoin ecosystem could see a new wave of liquidity and DeFi innovation.
