Wormhole says Moonbeam will permanently shut down on July 31, 2026. GLMR holders can already migrate at a 1:1 ratio to a native ERC-20 on Base, and support from Wormhole and Portal ends after the deadline.

Wormhole has confirmed that the Moonbeam network will permanently shut down on July 31, 2026. Users with assets still on the chain, or funds bridged through it, now have a fixed deadline to move them out. After that date, Wormhole and Portal will no longer provide assistance.

Hard cutoff for users holding assets on Moonbeam

Moonbeam will continue operating in parallel until the July 31 deadline, but the responsibility for moving funds sits with users. The notice says assets must be bridged independently through Moonbeam before shutdown. Once the date passes, recovery paths disappear, which makes the timetable unusually clear even if the chain remains live for now.

The main transition path centers on the network token. GLMR holders can already migrate at a 1:1 ratio to a native ERC-20 token on Base, Coinbase’s Ethereum layer-2 network. The bridge is open now. No launch date has been given for what comes after the current migration period.

From Polkadot parachain to cross-chain hub

Moonbeam was built as an Ethereum-compatible smart contract parachain in the Polkadot ecosystem. As a parachain, it operated as an independent blockchain while drawing security from Polkadot’s relay chain. Over time, it became one of the better-known interoperability venues in that ecosystem, working with Wormhole on cross-chain asset movement and DeFi activity.

The shutdown was not presented as a sudden reversal. The source notes that Moonbeam had already announced the plan before its latest update, signaling that the decision had been in motion rather than made abruptly.

Team points to AI pivot and relaunch plan

The project frames the closure as a resource reallocation instead of a breakdown of the parachain model itself. According to the report, growth slowed as Ethereum layer-2 networks drew liquidity and developer attention away from Polkadot parachains. The team says opportunities tied to AI are driving the shift in focus.

Its next version is expected to relaunch under the name Moonbeam Protocol. The stated goal is a decentralized network for autonomous AI agents to discover each other, negotiate work, coordinate tasks, and settle payments on-chain without an intermediary. Beyond the active migration window, no release date has been announced.

Ctrl Wallet exit adds to the list of shutdowns

A day before the Moonbeam update, multichain self-custody product Ctrl Wallet also announced a permanent shutdown. Starting July 7, the wallet was removed from the App Store, Google Play, and browser extension stores, though existing users kept transfers, swaps, and dApp connections through August 2.

After August 3, Ctrl Wallet will only support mnemonic exports. Sending, receiving, swapping, and dApp access will all be disabled. Users are required to export their 12- or 24-word mnemonic into another wallet, or move assets to an exchange, before that window closes. For holders of GLMR or assets bridged through Moonbeam, the immediate task is straightforward: complete the transfer before July 31.
