MoonPay has released the Open Wallet Standard, an open-source framework built to give AI agents a common wallet layer for holding assets, signing transactions, and making payments across blockchain networks. The move extends the company’s push into AI-focused crypto infrastructure, with attention on software agents that can carry out financial actions without direct human input.
The company says the standard is meant to let AI systems interact with wallets without exposing private keys. It also introduces a shared interface for transaction signing and asset management across different blockchain environments. In MoonPay’s view, that missing wallet layer has been a blocker even as payment rails for AI-driven activity have started to emerge.
A wallet layer built for the “agent economy”
MoonPay ties the release to what it calls the “agent economy,” where AI systems buy data, access APIs, and pay for compute resources on their own. In that setup, wallets become core infrastructure. They are the mechanism through which agents store value and move funds independently.
The standard builds on MoonPay Agents, a non-custodial software layer introduced earlier this year that allows AI systems to connect directly to wallets and execute transactions programmatically. Together, the two products form a broader stack aimed at autonomous financial activity on-chain. CEO and co-founder Ivan Soto-Wright described the launch in direct terms: “The agent economy has payment rails. It didn’t have a wallet standard. We built one, open-sourced it, and now the full stack exists.”
Key handling and cross-chain support
One of the central issues in AI-driven crypto transactions is key management. MoonPay said the Open Wallet Standard encrypts private keys and decrypts them only briefly when a transaction needs to be signed, then removes them from memory. The design is intended to reduce exposure while still allowing automated execution.
The framework also uses a unified wallet structure that can work across multiple blockchain ecosystems, including Ethereum-compatible networks, Solana, and Bitcoin. That matters because separate wallet implementations for each chain have slowed cross-network automation. MoonPay positions the standard as a universal infrastructure layer so developers can integrate a single wallet model across protocols and environments instead of rebuilding the same logic chain by chain.
Backers include PayPal, Ripple, and Circle
MoonPay said more than a dozen organizations contributed to the development of the standard. The list includes PayPal, Ripple, Circle, the Solana Foundation, and the TON Foundation. Their involvement points to early interest in shared infrastructure for AI-enabled transactions, though broader adoption will depend on whether protocols and developer communities choose a common approach over separate implementations.
The release is already available through open-source distribution channels, including GitHub, npm, and PyPI. For developers, the next question is practical rather than conceptual: whether this wallet standard can gain traction across competing blockchain ecosystems and become a common interface for AI agents handling payments, signed transactions, and asset management.
