On April 8, 2026, Morgan Stanley Investment Management, a subsidiary of Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS), officially launched the Morgan Stanley Bitcoin Trust (NYSE Arca: MSBT), marking the Wall Street giant's entry into the Bitcoin ETF arena. The product tracks Bitcoin using the CoinDesk Bitcoin Benchmark Rate (4 PM NY Settlement) and features a competitive 0.14% sponsor fee, significantly undercutting BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) which charges 0.25%.

Aggressive Fee Strategy Intensifies Bitcoin ETF Competition

MSBT's 0.14% fee is the lowest among major spot Bitcoin ETFs, putting immediate pricing pressure on incumbents like BlackRock IBIT (0.25%), Fidelity FBTC (0.25%), and ARK 21Shares ARKB (0.21%). The low fee is expected to attract cost-sensitive institutional investors, especially as Morgan Stanley's vast wealth management network — with over $1.3 trillion in client assets — begins distributing the product. Ben Huneke, Head of Morgan Stanley Investment Management, stated: “We are honored to introduce MSBT to the market and believe this new ETP aligns with long-term trends in financial innovation while strengthening the range of investment solutions we provide to investors.”

Ally Wallace, Global Head of ETF Strategy, added: “ETPs remain a powerful way for investors to gain exposure to new asset classes within a transparent and regulated framework.” The launch intensifies competition in a market that has seen rapidly growing inflows since the SEC's approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs in early 2024. As of MSBT's debut, the combined assets under management of U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs exceeded $90 billion.

Infrastructure Fusion: Coinbase and BNY Mellon

MSBT's operational structure reflects a hybrid model that bridges traditional finance and crypto-native infrastructure. Coinbase Custody Trust Company serves as the Bitcoin custodian, while BNY Mellon handles fund administration and accounting. This combination leverages Coinbase's proven security track record in digital assets and BNY's century-old institutional trust framework, signaling that institutional adoption has moved from exploratory to operational.

Amy Oldenburg, Head of Digital Asset Strategy at Morgan Stanley, commented: “Digital assets are increasingly converging with traditional markets, and our focus is on helping clients navigate that evolution through structures they understand and trust. MSBT reflects our firm's approach to carefully building digital asset capabilities based on traditional governance and market infrastructure designed to meet long-term client needs.”

The launch comes after Morgan Stanley had previously allowed its financial advisors to recommend certain Bitcoin ETFs to clients starting in 2024. With its own branded product, the firm now directly captures management fees and can offer tighter integration with its advisory services. Market analysts view MSBT as a catalyst for further fee compression and institutional adoption, potentially pushing other issuers to lower their fees while expanding the overall Bitcoin ETF market.
