Morgan Stanley has moved its spot Bitcoin ETF plan forward by filing an amended S-1 with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The updated filing confirms the fund will trade on NYSE Arca under the ticker MSBT, and says the trust will acquire its initial Bitcoin through the issuance of 50,000 shares, a structure expected to generate about $1 million in proceeds.
Ticker confirmed, fee details still missing
The revised filing gives the product a clearer launch structure. Morgan Stanley set out how the trust would be seeded and tied that process to the initial Bitcoin purchase, but it still did not disclose the management fee or the expense ratio. Those terms remain absent from the latest document.
Custody setup names Coinbase Custody and BNY Mellon
Morgan Stanley also finalized key service providers in the amended filing. Coinbase Custody and BNY Mellon were named in the custody arrangement, with BNY Mellon also serving as the trust’s cash custodian. The trust is structured as a passive investment vehicle, and the filing says it does not give investors direct exposure to owning Bitcoin itself.
The product is now past part of the initial regulatory process. It can go live only after the registration statement becomes effective and the SEC grants final approval.
Broader crypto push extends past a single ETF filing
Morgan Stanley submitted its spot Bitcoin ETF filing earlier this year and also filed separately for other crypto assets, including Ethereum and Solana. Its move into the spot crypto ETF market comes at a time when U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs have posted strong institutional inflows and outpaced the early growth path seen in Gold ETFs during their launch period.
The bank is also exploring Bitcoin-linked products beyond ETFs, including yield and lending services. At the recent Bitcoin for Corporations conference, digital assets strategy head Amy Oldenburg said it was a “natural part of the roadmap to continue to explore.” Morgan Stanley has also confirmed plans to offer retail trading in Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana through its E*Trade app.
