MSTR short interest surged to 12.6%, far above last year's 5% low. The stock is forming a symmetrical triangle with contracting volatility, signaling a major move ahead. Bitcoin's potential drop to $50K and share dilution remain key bearish drivers.

MSTR stock traded at $134 on Tuesday, up nearly 30% from its February trough but still well below the all-time high of $545. The highlight, however, is the surging short interest: Seeking Alpha data shows the bearish bet has jumped to 12.6%, compared to just 5% a year ago.

Three Headwinds Behind the Shorts

Short-sellers point to several red flags. Bitcoin's chart shows a bearish pennant pattern, and the escalating Iran conflict is pushing capital away from risk assets. Analysts warn BTC could tumble to $50,000 in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) keeps buying Bitcoin by selling its own shares. Outstanding shares have ballooned to over 310 million from less than 80 million a few years ago, diluting existing holders. The net asset value premium has also slipped below 1x, erasing the “Bitcoin premium” that once buoyed the stock.

Wall Street is turning more cautious. Mizuho cut its price target from $403 to $320, and BTIG slashed from $630 to $250. These downgrades add fuel to the bearish narrative.

Technical Setup: Triangle Nears Confluence

On the 12-hour chart, MSTR has been oscillating in a symmetrical triangle over the past month. The Average True Range (ATR) is steadily declining, indicating compressed volatility — a classic precursor to a big breakout. The two trendlines are about to converge, meaning a decisive move is likely in the near term.

A bearish breakdown could send the stock to test the year-to-date low of $104, followed by $100. Conversely, a strong bullish breakout might push the price toward the psychological $150 level. The direction of the breakout will determine the next leg, but the elevated short interest signals that bears are already positioned for a downside move.

Traders should watch for a confirmed close beyond the triangle boundaries before taking directional bets; false breakouts are common near the apex.
