On June 18, Elon Musk replied to a query on X regarding the timeline for China to reach Fable-level artificial intelligence, stating, “Maybe Q1.” The remark has drawn attention to the pace of China’s AI development.

Earlier, X user Teortaxes published an analysis noting that GLM 5.2 currently shows a lag of approximately seven months behind frontier models, placing it around the Opus 4.7-4.8 level. Mythos reached Preview status in early February 2026, and the full PRC Mythos (dubbed “Fable”) is expected to launch between November and December 2026. Teortaxes’ projection aligns with Musk’s response, suggesting that China’s progress in catching up with cutting-edge AI may be on track.
