Elon Musk briefly posted and then deleted a tweet featuring what appeared to be a pro-crypto quote attributed to Warren Buffett, stirring fresh debate over the billionaire’s influence on digital asset markets. The image showed Buffett alongside the line, “Find as many coins as you can. And fast!” Musk described it as Buffett’s “best financial advice” and said he had found it on the internet.
The post quickly drew thousands of likes and comments before disappearing from Musk’s account. Because Buffett has spent years criticizing Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies, the quote was widely viewed as fake or wrongly attributed. Buffett has repeatedly dismissed Bitcoin in public remarks, saying in 2019 that it had “no unique value at all”. In 2018, he argued that buying Bitcoin was not investing but speculation and gambling, and famously referred to it as “rat poison squared.”
Musk and Buffett Stand on Opposite Sides of Crypto
The deleted tweet highlighted the sharp contrast between the two men’s positions on digital assets. While Buffett remains one of Bitcoin’s most prominent critics, Musk has become one of crypto’s most visible corporate backers. His social media remarks have repeatedly moved sentiment across the market.
That influence was visible when Tesla suspended BTC payments for vehicles over concerns about fossil-fuel use in Bitcoin mining, a move that erased billions from the broader crypto economy. Earlier the same year, however, Tesla’s $1.5 billion investment in bitcoin had provided a major boost to the market. Musk later said he supported crypto over fiat in that broader contest and added that Tesla could resume bitcoin payments once miners demonstrated roughly 50% clean energy usage.
A Familiar Rivalry Beyond Crypto
The episode also fits into a longer history of public sparring between Musk and Buffett. In 2018, Musk mocked the idea of corporate “moats,” a concept strongly associated with Buffett, arguing that innovation matters more. Buffett responded by warning Musk not to challenge businesses protected by strong competitive advantages.
Musk has not explained why he removed the Buffett post. Still, the incident once again showed how even a seemingly playful or sarcastic message from Musk can attract outsized attention in crypto circles. When the speaker is someone whose online comments have repeatedly influenced market mood, even a deleted post can become a story in its own right.
