Elon Musk has revived the old “to the moon” narrative around Dogecoin after replying to a resurfaced post about his 2021 promise to send a “literal dogecoin on the literal moon.” On Tuesday, Musk first answered “Yes,” then followed with “Maybe next year.”
The exchange attracted heavy attention, yet the market response was muted. According to the report, DOGE continued trading just below $0.11, with the token down nearly 60% year over year and about 90% below its 2021 all-time high. A few years ago, comments from Musk were often enough to trigger a sharp move in the memecoin. This time, the price barely shifted.
A resurfaced 2021 post put the moon promise back in focus
The latest wave of speculation started after the Tesla Owners Silicon Valley account tagged Musk and posted a screenshot of his January 2021 message promising the feat. The account asked when it would happen. Musk replied in two short posts: first “Yes,” then “Maybe next year.” The replies quickly drew hundreds of thousands of views and reopened questions about whether SpaceX could link a future payload or promotional campaign to the token.
Neither Musk nor SpaceX gave any detail on what “next year” actually refers to. SpaceX also has not announced a new Dogecoin-related initiative. For now, the discussion is built on a brief social media exchange rather than any newly disclosed operational plan.
Dogecoin has a long history with Musk and a visible SpaceX tie
Musk has publicly backed Dogecoin for years, and his comments have repeatedly pulled the token back into the spotlight. In 2022, he said SpaceX would accept Dogecoin for some merchandise, following Tesla’s earlier move to accept DOGE payments for selected products.
The most direct SpaceX connection remains the DOGE-1 mission, a small satellite funded entirely in DOGE and slated to fly on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. First announced in 2021, the mission has faced repeated delays. Still, the report says it has cleared regulatory steps and remains one of the most visible Dogecoin-linked projects tied to SpaceX.
Without fresh details, Musk’s latest remark mainly brings an old crypto storyline back into circulation. The attention returned. The price response did not.
