NEAR Protocol unveils SPICE upgrade cutting block time to 200ms and finality to 0.4 seconds, outpacing Visa's 3-second standard. The architecture decouples consensus from execution, enabling sub-second payments and atomic cross-shard transactions.

NEAR Protocol has confirmed its biggest protocol upgrade since 2024: SPICE (Separation of Consensus and Execution). The headline metric: block time drops from 600 milliseconds to 200ms, a 3x improvement. According to Near One CTO Anton Astafiev, who previewed SPICE on June 22, 2026, finality will land at 0.4 seconds — faster than Visa's standard 3-second payment settlement.

How SPICE Works: Decoupling Agreement from Processing

Currently, NEAR's consensus (validators ordering blocks) and execution (processing transactions) are coupled — one waits for the other. SPICE separates them entirely: validators can agree on a list of transactions and a block hash without waiting for execution to finish. The result: three user actions can fit into the time a single block used to take, complex multi-step transactions no longer bottleneck the network, and long-running operations can span multiple blocks without slowdown.

Impact on Payments, Intents, and AI Agents

Defuse Labs CEO Alex Shevchenko put it bluntly: Visa's standard is 3 seconds; after SPICE, NEAR's finality becomes 0.4 seconds — "faster than typing a PIN." For NEAR Intents, the intent-based trading layer, faster finality means smoother trade UX. For AI agents, which operate at speeds humans can't match, SPICE enables parallel, complex transactions — positioning NEAR as the first protocol-level chain built for the agent economy.

Stepping Stone to Nightshade 3.0

Near One calls SPICE the first step toward Nightshade 3.0, the next iteration of NEAR's sharding system. Directly enabled upgrades include: cross-shard atomic execution (the "holy grail" of sharding), bubble filling (execution queues no longer wait on networking gaps), and better security (simpler, shorter blocks are easier to formally verify — critical as AI-accelerated exploits grow). NEAR notes this is the first such separation among sharded blockchains; Monad achieves a similar split but only in a non-sharded EVM context.

Upgrade Timeline

Dynamic resharding and the quantum signing scheme already launched in June 2026. SPICE is under development, with cross-shard atomic execution and Nightshade 3.0 as future targets. With prerequisite upgrades like gas keys and sharded smart contracts complete, development is accelerating.
