Netflix has officially moved forward with The Altruists, an eight-episode limited series built around the collapse of FTX and the internal story of Alameda Research. Announced on March 17, the project focuses on Sam Bankman-Fried and Caroline Ellison, two of the most recognizable figures tied to the exchange’s downfall. According to the source material, the series will trace how the pair presented themselves as ambitious idealists before becoming linked to an alleged $8 billion misuse of customer assets.
Julia Garner and Anthony Boyle lead the cast
The lead casting is a major part of the project’s appeal. Julia Garner, known for Ozark and Inventing Anna, will play former Alameda Research CEO Caroline Ellison. Anthony Boyle, who recently appeared in Masters of the Air, has been cast as Sam Bankman-Fried, once framed in crypto circles as a rising star. The production team describes the couple as “Gen Z’s Bonnie and Clyde,” setting up a story that follows their path from elite, world-changing ambitions to fraud allegations and criminal consequences.
The title of the series draws directly from “effective altruism,” the philosophy Bankman-Fried repeatedly promoted in public. That idea formed a central part of his carefully built image, and the show appears set to contrast that branding with the facts that emerged after FTX unraveled.
A high-profile production team is behind the series
Behind the camera, Netflix has assembled an established team. The Imitation Game writer Graham Moore will serve as co-showrunner and executive producer alongside Jacqueline Hoyt. Moore said, “For the past three years, Sam and Caroline’s story has been my daily obsession.”
The series is also being developed with Higher Ground Productions, the company founded by Barack and Michelle Obama, and is inspired by a deep-dive investigation published by New York Magazine. Other announced cast members include Alex Lawther as Sam Trabucco, Matt Rife as Ryan Salame, Jennifer Grey as Sarah Fisher Ellison, Paul Reiser as Joe Bankman, and Terry Chen as Binance founder CZ.
FTX becomes streaming drama material
Netflix has not announced a release date. Even so, the launch of the project shows how strongly the FTX case continues to hold mainstream entertainment interest. The source notes that several real-world developments have already closed major parts of the story, including Bankman-Fried receiving a 25-year sentence and Ellison serving as a cooperating witness. The series is expected to examine the mix of technology, ideology, ambition, and power that defined one of crypto’s most dramatic collapses.
