The identity of Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin, remains one of the most enduring mysteries in the digital asset industry. Over the years, many names have been proposed, and one of the most frequently discussed is early Bitcoin contributor Hal Finney. A new analysis by software engineer and columnist Jameson Lopp, however, pushes back against that theory and lays out several pieces of evidence suggesting Finney was not the person behind the Nakamoto name.
Lopp’s research does not claim to definitively identify Satoshi. Instead, it focuses on testing a popular hypothesis against historical records, timestamps, and blockchain data. The result is a detailed argument that challenges one of the most persistent narratives in Bitcoin history.
A timeline conflict at the center of the argument
One of the strongest points in Lopp’s analysis comes from a 10-mile race on April 18, 2009 in which Hal Finney reportedly participated. According to the research, Finney was actively racing for 1 hour and 18 minutes. During that same window, Satoshi Nakamoto was communicating by email with early Bitcoin developer Mike Hearn.
Lopp examined the timing closely, including time zone conversions. Hearn, who was based in Zurich at the time, received an email response from Satoshi at 6:16 p.m. local time. Converted to U.S. Pacific time, that corresponds to 9:16 a.m. On the same day, Finney reportedly crossed the finish line in California just two minutes later. If these records are accurate, the overlap creates a serious problem for the idea that Finney and Satoshi were the same individual.
Photographic evidence supports Finney’s presence at the race
A natural objection to the timeline argument is whether Finney might not have personally run the race. Lopp addresses that possibility by citing third-party evidence. Photographs from event photo service Photocrazy, along with an image taken by Finney’s wife, are said to confirm that Finney was physically present and participating in the event.
That visual documentation matters because it narrows the room for alternative explanations. If Finney was indeed on the course during the relevant time, then the theory that he was simultaneously operating as Satoshi becomes much harder to sustain.
The 32.5 BTC transaction raises further doubts
Lopp’s report also points to another important event on the same day: Satoshi sent 32.5 BTC to Mike Hearn. That transaction was confirmed at approximately 8:55 a.m. Pacific time. The previous block on the Bitcoin blockchain had been mined at 8:28 a.m. Pacific time, which suggests the transaction was likely created, signed, and broadcast sometime between 8:28 a.m. and 8:55 a.m.
According to the analysis, this period also overlaps with the time Finney was still racing. That overlap does not absolutely rule out every conceivable scenario, but it adds another layer of friction to the Finney-as-Satoshi theory. In other words, the challenge is not based on a single timestamp or one isolated communication, but on a broader pattern of events that appear difficult to reconcile.
Mining pattern analysis adds another data point
Beyond emails and transaction records, Lopp also references mining subsidy analysis involving blocks 11,407, 11,408, and 11,409. These blocks are believed to have been mined by “Patoshi”, a miner pattern many researchers have associated with Satoshi Nakamoto. Lopp argues that the timing of these blocks also overlaps with Finney’s race activity.
That detail is significant because it broadens the evidence base from communication records into blockchain behavior. If the same time window includes both race participation by Finney and activity believed to be linked to Satoshi’s mining footprint, the case against equating the two figures becomes stronger.
Why the theory has mattered beyond curiosity
The question of Satoshi’s identity is often framed as an intellectual puzzle, but the article notes that speculation has had real-world consequences. Hal Finney himself was repeatedly pulled into the spotlight by claims that he was Bitcoin’s creator. The same broader phenomenon also affected Dorian Nakamoto, who became the subject of intense public attention after being wrongly identified in media reports.
The report further notes that false claims around Satoshi’s identity have been exploited by scammers seeking credibility, influence, or financial gain. For that reason, discussions about who did or did not create Bitcoin are not merely historical debates; they can directly affect reputations, privacy, and public trust.

Lopp’s research stops short of solving the Satoshi mystery. It does not present a conclusive alternative identity, nor does it claim to close the case permanently. What it does provide is a structured rebuttal to one of the most popular theories in the Bitcoin community.
By combining email timestamps, time zone analysis, race participation records, transaction timing, and mining-related evidence, the study argues that Hal Finney was likely not acting as Satoshi Nakamoto on the date examined. For a debate that has often relied on circumstantial narratives and retrospective interpretation, this kind of evidence-based approach is notable.
As with many questions surrounding Bitcoin’s earliest history, certainty remains elusive. But if Lopp’s reconstruction is correct, one of the most widely repeated candidates for Satoshi can be viewed with greater skepticism. That does not reveal who Satoshi was, yet it may help narrow the field and sharpen the standards of evidence used in future debates.
