The crypto art market has reached a new milestone. Matt Kane's NFT digital artwork 'Right Place & Right Time' has been sold for 262 ETH (approximately $101,100) on the blockchain-based platform Async Art, making it one of the highest-priced works on the platform to date.
Dynamic Art: Bitcoin Volatility Drives Daily Changes
According to the artwork's description on Async Art's website, the master composition is independently regenerated each day based on Bitcoin's volatility and price action from the previous 24 hours. The piece consists of 24 layers — one for each hour — and price data programmatically controls the rotation, scale, and position of each corresponding layer. Viewers can infer the day's price volatility by examining the visual output, though the artist retains some influence over variations.
“It’s humbling. I’m most excited I’ve helped open price levels for other digital artists to have their work taken seriously and begin making a living from art sales,” said Chicago-born Kane. He wrote the code that generates the daily image changes and emphasized that blockchain technology solves provenance and scarcity problems that had plagued digital art sales.
Unique Economic Model: 210 NFTs and 21% Revenue Share
The buyer is Token Angels, a crypto-focused angel investor and art collector. Under Kane's plan, variations of the artwork will be minted over the next 10 years, with the artist periodically releasing new NFTs representing important days in Bitcoin's history. Each NFT also grants its holder the right to purchase a physical print.
“As a nod to Bitcoin’s 21 million fixed supply, the collector receives 21% revenue share of the individual NFT and print sales, and there will only be 210 NFTs minted,” said Kane. The artistic experiment will run as a creative counterpart to Bitcoin, using visualized volatility to help the artist “mine” 210 NFTs.
“I’ll be investigating what a decentralized artwork can evolve into, as proof-of-work necessitates increasing challenges over time. But just like Bitcoin, the passage of time will be required in order to observe the grander masterpiece that is at work.” — Matt Kane
Digital Art Market Continues to Heat Up
Since its launch in February 2020, Async Art has facilitated over $2.3 million in transactions, with artist sales exceeding $400,000. The platform specializes in programmable art — digital paintings split into layers that buyers can purchase or influence to alter the overall image.
According to data from nonfungible.com, over 4.82 million NFTs have been sold worldwide since the market emerged, totaling more than $109 million, with an average price of $22.65. Kane's record sale far exceeds that average, signaling that serious collectors and capital are increasingly flowing into the crypto art space.
