Nifty Gateway, the platform that once stood at the epicenter of the NFT art boom, has announced its closure. Effective February 23, 2026, the marketplace will enter withdrawal-only mode, giving users one month to move their NFTs or funds.
Shutdown and Withdrawal Window
According to the official announcement, users can withdraw funds via their Gemini exchange account or directly to a bank account through Stripe. The platform urges users to act before the deadline to avoid asset loss.
From Glory to Pivot
Founded in 2014 and acquired by Winklevoss-led Gemini in 2019, Nifty Gateway simplified NFT buying with credit card support, bringing digital collectibles to the mainstream. In February 2021, a piece by legendary artist Beeple (Mike Winkelmann) sold for $6.6 million on the platform, setting a digital art record. Weeks later, the same work fetched $69.3 million at Christie's, igniting the NFT craze. At its peak, Nifty Gateway partnered with Eminem, The Weeknd, Grimes, and other pop culture icons. Data shows it facilitated over $300 million in transactions by mid-2021. But the frenzy faded fast. By April 2024, the company had pivoted to Nifty Gateway Studio, focusing on brand partnerships, yet failed to reverse liquidity evaporation.
Focus on Super App
The closure, per the official statement, allows Gemini to concentrate on building a one-stop super app. Gemini Wallet will continue to support NFT features going forward.
