Northern Trust has entered an agreement with Digital Asset to build custody capabilities for tokenized financial assets by connecting its digital assets platform to Canton Network. The initiative extends the bank’s asset servicing model into blockchain-based market infrastructure built for regulated financial institutions.

The plan centers on adapting Northern Trust’s existing custody framework rather than creating a separate operating stack. Tokenized assets issued or transacted on the network are intended to be supported within the bank’s established servicing model, allowing clients to keep familiar operating standards while adding digital asset exposure. In simple terms, Northern Trust is trying to bring its current custody role into on-chain markets.

Canton Network integration brings custody into regulated tokenized markets

According to the announcement, the integration will enable custody and asset servicing workflows for tokenized financial instruments on Canton Network. That network is designed for regulated financial use cases, with an emphasis on privacy, compliance, and interoperability. It supports issuance, transfer, and settlement of tokenized assets while maintaining data access controls and regulatory oversight.

The network differs from public blockchains aimed at retail activity. It is structured around institutional requirements, and financial institutions and market utilities are already using it for on-chain workflows across multiple asset classes. Northern Trust’s addition brings custody and servicing functions into that environment.

Platform design targets the full digital asset lifecycle

Northern Trust said the connection is expected to support the full lifecycle of digital assets, from asset creation and trading through custody, settlement, and reporting. Applications built on Canton Network will be designed to work across those stages inside existing institutional frameworks, instead of asking clients to move to an entirely separate system.

Guy Gibson, Co-President of Asset Servicing and Head of Institutional Banking and Markets at Northern Trust, said clients want custody and servicing models that match established market standards and regulatory expectations as institutional adoption of digital assets progresses. He said linking to Canton Network allows Northern Trust to extend its asset servicing role into new market structures while keeping the same principles of scale, control, and risk management.

Justin Chapman, Group Head of Strategic Partnerships, Digital and Financial Markets at Northern Trust, said the connection supports the firm’s effort to enable the digital asset lifecycle from creation and trading to custody and reporting through blockchain technology. He added that the platform is built to support digital and traditional assets side by side and follows a blockchain-agnostic and asset-agnostic approach as markets evolve.

Custodians move closer to the center of institutional adoption

Digital Asset CEO Yuval Rooz said custodians are taking on a critical role as more real-world assets move on-chain in regulated markets. In his view, the integration with Northern Trust shows how traditional asset servicing models can extend into digital market infrastructure while preserving the controls institutions require.

The move points to a broader convergence between traditional financial infrastructure and blockchain-based systems. Tokenization is being inserted into established custody, operational, and reporting workflows instead of being treated as a standalone replacement model. For institutional clients, that reduces the need to overhaul operating processes while digital assets are introduced into portfolios.

Northern Trust also signaled that the ability to connect with multiple networks and workflows may become an important requirement for asset servicers. Its platform is intended to remain compatible with different blockchain technologies and asset types, showing how custody models are shifting toward unified support for both conventional and tokenized assets.
