According to Techub News, the Norwegian government announced on June 19 that it will ban the use of generative AI tools in schools for children aged 6 to 13 starting from the end of August 2026. The move is intended to address declining performance in basic subjects and to safeguard the development of core skills such as reading, writing, and mathematics. The government expressed concern that premature exposure to generative AI could hinder the cultivation of critical thinking and literacy.
Age-Based Management Policy
The policy divides students into three age groups with differentiated management: the strictest restrictions apply to younger students (ages 6-13), who are completely prohibited from using AI tools at school; students aged 14-16 are allowed to use AI under teacher supervision; and students aged 17-19 are encouraged to actively use AI to prepare for university and future careers. This tiered approach reflects Norway's careful balance between education and technology adoption.
