NVIDIA on July 23 released an open-source Medical Physics Simulation framework designed to address the severe shortage of real clinical data for surgical robots. The framework combines classical physics simulation with generative AI and can produce large volumes of rare edge-case scenarios, including guidewires becoming stuck against calcified vessel walls. According to the release carried by BlockBeats, the system runs across 8,192 parallel environments and cuts training time from five hours to less than two minutes. Early adopters include CMR Surgical, Johnson & Johnson MedTech, and Medtronic. The open-source design is also positioned as a way to help developers show regulators how a system behaves and build an evidentiary chain for approvals. At the same time, no strategy trained with the framework has yet been deployed in real clinical settings.

According to BlockBeats, NVIDIA on July 23 released an open-source Medical Physics Simulation framework aimed at one of the core bottlenecks in surgical robotics: the extreme scarcity of real clinical data.

The framework combines classical physics simulation with generative AI and can generate rare clinical edge cases at scale, including scenarios in which a guidewire gets stuck against a calcified vessel wall.

NVIDIA said the framework can run 8,192 parallel environments, reducing training time from five hours to less than two minutes. Early adopters include CMR Surgical, Johnson & Johnson MedTech, and Medtronic.

BlockBeats reported that the framework’s open-source structure could also help teams demonstrate system behavior to regulators and build an evidence chain for approval. So far, however, no strategy trained on the framework has been deployed in real clinical practice.
