Augustus, a startup backed by Peter Thiel, has received conditional approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency to move ahead with a full-service U.S. national bank. The proposed entity, Augustus Bank, N.A., is designed around AI-driven payments and stablecoin settlement, targeting machine-led financial activity and always-on clearing infrastructure.

The company said the bank would run on an AI-native core built for autonomous financial workflows rather than conventional, human-led banking processes. Its settlement system is based on stablecoin clearing for major Western currencies, with a goal of offering 24/7 clearing without the limits of standard banking hours.

Existing euro-clearing operations give Augustus a base

Before launching a national bank in the United States, Augustus had already built regulated euro-clearing subsidiaries in Europe. The company said it processes billions of euros annually and currently provides euro-clearing services for crypto exchange Kraken. That gives the firm an operating foundation as it seeks to extend the model into the U.S. market.

Once it receives final licensing, Augustus plans to add U.S. dollar clearing to its current euro infrastructure. The stated objective is a unified cross-border settlement platform that global financial institutions can use across both currency systems.

Stablecoin regulation is central to the bank plan

Augustus tied the timing of its bank effort to changes in U.S. stablecoin regulation. The company said the GENIUS Act created a clearer legal structure for banks to interact with stablecoins under federal oversight. In its view, that made programmable-money banking models legally viable for the first time.

The startup also noted that fewer than 10 full-service national bank charters have been granted since 2010. On that measure alone, the OCC’s conditional approval stands out.

CEO, funding, and bank leadership details

If the charter receives final approval, chief executive Ferdinand Dabitz, 25, will lead Augustus Bank. Reports said Dabitz would become the youngest CEO of a federally chartered U.S. bank in more than a century.

On the capital side, Augustus has raised $40 million from investors including Valar Ventures, Creandum, and founders linked to Ramp, Deel, and Circle. Company president Greg Quarles previously worked at Green Dot Bank and H&R Block Bank. Augustus also said it has hired former regulators and banking executives to reinforce regulatory oversight and compliance capacity.

The company argues that geopolitical competition and the expansion of AI systems are increasing demand for programmable financial infrastructure and stablecoin settlement networks. Final approval is still pending, but the operating thesis is already clear: combine stablecoin clearing, cross-border settlement, and machine-initiated payments inside a regulated banking structure.
