Iran's creation of the Persian Gulf Strait Authority to oversee Hormuz transit and impose fees triggered oil price volatility. WTI fell to $88.66 before rebounding above $96; Brent returned to $103. Market focuses on US-Iran negotiations.

International crude oil markets experienced a dramatic swing on Wednesday morning (May 6, 2026). Early reports that U.S. President Donald Trump was close to reaching a peace agreement with Iran to end Operation Epic Fury sent prices plummeting. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures dropped sharply to $88.66 per barrel, while Brent crude for July delivery fell to $96.75 per barrel.

Sentiment reversed suddenly after Iran announced the creation of the "Persian Gulf Strait Authority", a new body tasked with monitoring maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. The authority's website indicates plans to levy transit fees and enforce regulations issued by the current Iranian government, directly contradicting U.S. conditions for ending the conflict and the naval blockade against Iran. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy stated: "With the end of threats from aggressors and under new procedures, safe and sustainable passage through the strait will be possible."

Oil Prices Rebound Sharply

Following the announcement, WTI futures for June delivery surged back above $96 per barrel, and Brent for July climbed to over $103 per barrel, largely reversing the earlier losses. Analysts said the establishment of an independent Iranian authority threatens to derail the fragile US-Iran talks over freedom of navigation, reigniting supply-risk premiums.

Earlier, President Trump had posted on Truth Social: "Assuming Iran agrees to what has been agreed upon (which is perhaps a big assumption), the already legendary Epic Fury will be over, and the highly effective blockade will allow the Strait of Hormuz to be OPEN TO ALL, including Iran." The new Iranian move appears to undercut that assumption.

Geopolitical Risk at Hormuz Heightened

The Strait of Hormuz carries about 20% of the world's oil. Any restrictions on transit can directly impact global energy supplies. While Iran previously reopened the strait, leading to a price crash, the creation of a dedicated authority with fee-collecting powers is seen as a more strategic and long-term intervention. The IRGC Navy emphasized it would enforce new transit rules, adding further uncertainty.

As of press time, markets are assessing the actual enforcement capability of the new Iranian authority and the prospects for further US-Iran diplomacy. In the near term, crude prices are expected to remain highly volatile, with geopolitical risks potentially spilling over into other asset classes, including cryptocurrencies.
