A veteran of the oil industry with a background at Malaysia's Petronas is attempting to bring the world's roughly $6 trillion crude market onto the blockchain. Baron Lamarre, former business development manager at Petco (Petronas' trading arm), is co-founder of the International Digital Exchange (INDEX), a blockchain-based platform for tokenized oil. Its token, LITRO, represents 1 liter of actual crude and is indexed to global benchmarks such as Brent and West Texas Intermediate. The project plans to launch its testnet and product demo between March and May 2026, with the official mainnet debut targeted for January 2027.
Legacy Crude Trading: 90-Day Settlements and High Barriers
Crude oil is the lifeblood of the global economy, a fact underscored by war-driven price spikes above $100 per barrel and subsequent financial market volatility. Yet the machinery powering this massive market remains archaic: dominated by legacy exchanges, mountains of paperwork, and high entry barriers that exclude all but the largest players. A single commodity deal often drags through multiple banks and clearinghouses, with settlement delays of up to 90 days, locking up billions in capital. Middle East conflicts further disrupt supply chains and amplify volatility. Under the current system, dominated by CME and ICE, smaller and mid-sized investors are sidelined due to high capital requirements and a lack of direct access.
How LITRO Works: Audited Reserves and On-Chain Trading
LITRO's tokenization aims to break this logjam. Producers pledge certified reserves to the INDEX platform. Independent auditors then verify the quantity, authenticity, and ownership of the crude before any LITRO tokens are minted. While the physical oil remains securely stored at the producer's facility, the legal title is digitally assigned to the INDEX system. Token holders own corresponding crude oil entitlements, and trades settle on-chain without waiting through lengthy conventional procedures.
Speaking to CoinDesk, Lamarre said: "Litro's testnet and product demo roll out March through May 2026, with official launch in January 2027." He stressed the project's real-world anchor — in contrast to the speculative tokens flooding the wider digital asset space, LITRO is strictly tied to physical inventory. The Real World Asset (RWA) market, now exceeding $25 billion, is dominated by tokenized financial instruments like government bonds; LITRO directly targets the most fundamental commodity: crude. If on schedule, LITRO could dramatically boost trading efficiency in the $6 trillion oil market, lowering entry barriers for smaller investors. Whether it can truly solve the deep-seated trust and regulatory challenges of the old system remains to be seen after the mainnet goes live in 2027.
