OKX Star said in a post on X that he does not view THORChain’s threshold signature scheme, or TSS, combined with its validator model as true decentralization. He argued that THORChain validators jointly control the underlying assets held in TSS vaults, and that once the signature threshold is met, those funds can be moved. From a custody standpoint, he said, that setup is not comparable to the base-layer consensus mechanisms of Bitcoin or Ethereum, but instead places THORChain in an intermediary role between users and native chains. In the same post, he wrote that TSS distributes control across multiple participants, but distributing the intermediary does not remove the intermediary itself. The exchange came after debate over some stolen Bitget funds being moved through THORChain. THORChain responded that it is decentralized and permissionless in the same way as Bitcoin, Ethereum and BNB Chain, and asked what responsibility those networks should bear if stolen funds are known to have passed through them.

OKX Star said in a post on X that he does not consider THORChain’s TSS-plus-validator model to represent true decentralization.

He said THORChain validators jointly control the underlying assets in TSS vaults, and that funds can be moved once the signature threshold is reached. From a custody perspective, he argued, that makes the design different from the base-layer consensus mechanisms of Bitcoin and Ethereum, with THORChain serving instead as an intermediary between users and native chains.

"TSS distributes control among multiple participants, but decentralizing the intermediary does not eliminate the intermediary itself," OKX Star wrote.

The discussion followed earlier debate after some stolen Bitget funds were transferred through THORChain. In response, THORChain said it is decentralized and permissionless, like Bitcoin, Ethereum and BNB Chain, and asked what responsibility those networks should bear if stolen funds are known to have flowed through Bitcoin, Ethereum or BNB Chain.
