Ondo Finance has completed what it described as the first near-real-time, cross-border redemption of a tokenized U.S. Treasury fund using the XRP Ledger, in a pilot that also involved Ripple, Mastercard, and J.P. Morgan’s Kinexys. The test is notable because it connects public blockchain infrastructure with conventional banking rails, addressing one of the biggest obstacles in institutional tokenization: how digital assets are redeemed into bank-settled fiat money efficiently across borders.
A live test of tokenized Treasury redemption
According to the announcement, Ripple redeemed a portion of its holdings in Ondo Short-Term U.S. Government Treasuries (OUSG). The redemption was executed on the XRP Ledger, while the fiat side of the process was triggered through Mastercard’s Multi-Token Network (MTN). J.P. Morgan’s Kinexys blockchain infrastructure then initiated the fiat payment flow, and the money was routed through the bank’s correspondent network before being delivered to Ripple’s bank account in Singapore.
This workflow matters because it shows more than an on-chain transfer. It demonstrates a full redemption path from a tokenized real-world asset into usable funds inside the traditional banking system. In practical terms, that means a holder of tokenized Treasuries may be able to move from blockchain-based ownership to off-chain bank settlement with far less delay than legacy processes often impose.
Why the pilot matters for institutions
For banks and large financial institutions, tokenization has long promised faster settlement, greater transparency, and broader market access. Yet one of the most persistent bottlenecks has been the so-called “last mile” problem: converting a tokenized position back into fiat currency that can move through existing bank networks, especially across jurisdictions and outside standard banking hours.
Ondo’s pilot directly targeted that pain point. By linking the XRP Ledger to Mastercard’s MTN and J.P. Morgan’s payment infrastructure, the companies showed that tokenized securities can be redeemed and settled in a way that more closely resembles 24/7 financial market operations. That is particularly relevant for cross-border use cases, where multiple intermediaries, cut-off times, and fragmented payment systems have historically slowed down settlement.
Ripple framed the result as a significant step for the industry, arguing that the pilot illustrates how institutions can execute cross-border transactions within a single integrated process rather than relying on disconnected digital and traditional systems.
Public blockchain meets private financial rails
The structure of the transaction is also important from a market infrastructure perspective. Much of institutional finance has explored private or permissioned systems for tokenization, while public blockchains have offered open access, programmability, and continuous availability. This pilot suggests the two models do not have to compete in isolation. Instead, they can be combined in a layered architecture where a public blockchain handles tokenized asset activity while established banking rails manage fiat settlement and account delivery.
That hybrid model could be attractive to institutions seeking blockchain efficiency without abandoning the compliance, payment, and custody frameworks that traditional finance still depends on. The test therefore stands out not simply as a technical proof of concept, but as an example of how tokenized finance may scale in practice: by integrating blockchain-native systems with incumbent financial infrastructure rather than trying to replace it all at once.
Ondo deepens its institutional presence
The announcement arrives as Ondo Finance continues to expand its role in institutional tokenization. On May 4, the firm was selected to join a working group led by the Depository Trust and Clearing Corp. (DTCC), focused on defining how traditional capital markets infrastructure can be brought on-chain. That initiative includes heavyweight participants such as BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, and Franklin Templeton.
The presence of those firms signals a broader shift in attitude across Wall Street. Tokenization is increasingly being treated not as a niche crypto experiment, but as a possible upgrade to the infrastructure of fixed income, funds, collateral, and settlement. While the industry is still early in standardizing these systems, the involvement of major asset managers and market utilities suggests the conversation is moving from theory toward implementation.
Implications for the tokenized asset market
The successful pilot does not mean all frictions have been removed from tokenized finance, but it offers evidence that one of the hardest operational challenges can be addressed. Near-real-time redemption of tokenized Treasuries into a bank account in another jurisdiction is a meaningful milestone because it touches the exact area where institutional adoption tends to stall: interoperability between blockchain assets and real-world payment networks.
If replicated at scale, similar workflows could strengthen the appeal of tokenized government securities and other real-world assets for global institutions. Faster redemption cycles, more flexible settlement windows, and smoother cross-border movement of funds could all improve liquidity management and reduce operational delays. For now, the Ondo-Ripple-Mastercard-Kinexys test serves as a concrete example of how the tokenization stack is evolving from isolated issuance toward end-to-end financial utility.
In that sense, the significance of the pilot goes beyond a single transaction. It offers a working model for how tokenized assets may eventually function inside mainstream finance: issued and transferred on-chain, but redeemable into bank money through coordinated networks that span both crypto and traditional financial infrastructure.
