OpenAI is reportedly accelerating the release of an always-on AI assistant called "o" after Meta’s personal AI agent Muse received the top rating in JPMorgan’s Assistant Benchmark.
According to tech outlet wccftech, OpenAI has added "o" branding to ChatGPT Pro-related product documents, a sign that a formal launch may be close. The product is expected to appear at Dev Day on Tuesday, Sept. 29.
"o" is said to target long-running tasks
The move has been widely interpreted as a response to Meta Muse’s recent momentum. In JPMorgan’s latest Assistant Benchmark, Meta Muse was ranked as the leading AI agent among the products evaluated.
Wccftech said OpenAI’s answer is a product positioned as an "always-on AI assistant" called "o." Public details remain limited. Still, X user @synthwavedd wrote that "o" is said to run on "Aeon," a specific variant of GPT-6 Astra. That model is reportedly strong at handling long-running tasks, a core requirement for an effective personal agent.
The competitive field extends beyond Muse. The report said OpenAI’s entry also puts it up against Grok Bot and Hermes Agent, adding more pressure to an already active personal AI assistant segment.
Dev Day may also bring a new premium subscription
Beyond "o," OpenAI is also expected to introduce a new subscription tier called ChatGPT Pro Max at Dev Day. The reported price is $500 per month, with the product focused on ultra-fast response speeds.
That performance is said to be supported by Cerebras’ Wafer-Scale Engine, with the offering aimed at professional users who place a high value on speed and computing performance.
Rumored hardware tie-in could expand the product lineup
The report also said "o" will work as a software companion for an upcoming consumer AI device from OpenAI. The device is rumored to resemble a donut and may include moving parts.
If both product lines move forward together, the plan would show OpenAI trying to build defenses in both software agents and hardware endpoints as it faces pressure from Meta and other rivals.
Muse ranked first in JPMorgan’s benchmark
Meta Muse’s rise appears to be the immediate backdrop to OpenAI’s push. In JPMorgan’s latest Assistant Benchmark, Muse ranked first among all AI agents reviewed, ahead of multiple competitors, including OpenAI products.
Muse is described as a personal AI agent that can carry out multi-step tasks on a user’s behalf. Its core functions include opening a cloud browser on its own, browsing the web in a human-like way, and continuing to process tasks in the background after the user closes the app.
To address privacy concerns, Muse runs inside a dedicated isolated cloud virtual machine, or VM, with a separate browser used to securely store user data and login credentials.
