Business Insider had counted 13 departures as of Aug. 21, while The Wall Street Journal later reported that data center head Chris Malone had also left, bringing the total to at least 14. The exits span a wide range of functions inside the company, including business, product, safety, ethics, research, and infrastructure. The named executives include Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser, former COO and special projects lead Brad Lightcap, applications business CEO Fidji Simo, former CPO and OpenAI for Science lead Kevin Weil, Sora lead Bill Peebles, enterprise applications CTO Srinivas Narayanan, CMO Kate Rouch, enterprise AI sales lead Barret Zoph, ethics lead Chloé Bakalar, safety systems lead Johannes Heidecke, chief futurist Joshua Achiam, robotics and consumer hardware lead Caitlin Kalinowski, Americas sales VP Kaylin Voss, and Chris Malone. The report said the departures did not stem from a single cause. Some left to start companies, some stepped away for health reasons, and others were affected by team cuts and management reshuffles. It also said OpenAI confidentially filed for a U.S. IPO in June.
