OpenAI introduced the GPT-5.6 series preview on June 27, offering three tiered models: GPT-5.6 Sol is the new frontier flagship model, achieving a new SOTA on complex tasks such as Terminal-Bench 2.1, with particularly strong performance in long-cycle vulnerability research and exploitation in cybersecurity; GPT-5.6 Terra delivers performance close to GPT-5.5 but at approximately 50% lower inference cost, making it suitable for cost-sensitive applications; GPT-5.6 Luna is the lowest-cost, high-throughput model designed for high-frequency API calls, significantly reducing per-query expenses.
Naming Coincidence and Community Reaction
The model names—Sol, Terra, and Luna—directly overlap with several well-known crypto tokens and blockchain projects: Sol aligns with Solana (SOL); Terra matches the Terra Classic (LUNA Classic) ecosystem and its native token; Luna is the native token of the Terra blockchain. This naming coincidence immediately sparked extensive discussion within the crypto community. Solana's official account replied on social media, and numerous crypto influencers joked about whether OpenAI is hinting at entering the Web3 space. Some community members speculated that OpenAI may have drawn inspiration from the crypto industry or is employing a deliberate marketing tactic. As of now, OpenAI has not commented on any link between the model names and crypto projects.
Rollout Plan and Restrictions
OpenAI stated that the three models will gradually become available to the public over the coming weeks. However, due to U.S. government requirements, access is currently limited to a small group of trusted partners via Codex and the API platform. This means general developers and users cannot yet experience the full capabilities of GPT-5.6 series. OpenAI emphasized that access will be expanded once compliance reviews are completed. For developers reliant on low-cost, high-throughput models, the Luna model is particularly noteworthy—it could further reduce the marginal cost of AI services.
