Crypto-focused investment firm Paradigm officially announced on November 15, 2021, the launch of a massive $2.5 billion venture capital fund, Paradigm One, dedicated to investing in the next generation of crypto companies and protocols. Co-founders Matt Huang and Fred Ehrsam stated: “The new fund and its size are reflective of crypto being the most exciting frontier in technology.” The fund raised twice the amount initially targeted, marking the largest new venture capital fund in the history of the crypto space.
Fund Details and Structure
Paradigm One is the firm’s first pure venture capital vehicle. Previously, Paradigm operated a hedge fund-style flagship fund that raised an initial $400 million in 2018 and achieved an annual internal rate of return exceeding 200% through the first half of 2021, with assets peaking at $10 billion. The new fund will invest alongside the existing flagship fund across all stages and geographies. Ehrsam told the Financial Times: “It is probably small relative to where we’re going in 10 years.”
Industry Comparison and Background
The previous record was held by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), which raised a $2.2 billion crypto fund earlier in 2021. Paradigm’s $2.5 billion fund surpasses that figure, underscoring the growing appetite for crypto among institutional investors. Paradigm was co-founded in 2018 by Coinbase co-founder Fred Ehrsam and former Sequoia Capital partner Matt Huang, who led Sequoia’s early crypto efforts. The pair emphasized: “Over the past decade, crypto has come a long way. The journey is just beginning, and the potential of crypto has never been more clear.”
Investment Focus and Outlook
The new fund will target investments in next-generation crypto companies and protocols, covering decentralized finance (DeFi), Web3 infrastructure, Layer 2 scaling solutions, NFTs, and more. In a public letter, Huang and Ehrsam wrote: “Our conviction in these beliefs has only strengthened over the past three years, and we are pleased to announce a new $2.5 billion venture fund to continue investing in the next generation of crypto companies and protocols.” They noted that while early successes have occurred, broad adoption and disruptive potential remain in early stages. Paradigm’s blockbuster raise is seen as a strong signal of accelerating institutional capital inflows into crypto markets.
Notably, Paradigm holds stakes in leading projects such as Uniswap, Optimism, and Flashbots. The new fund is expected to further cement its leadership in crypto venture investing. As traditional capital increasingly warms to digital assets, Paradigm One could trigger a new wave of crypto venture competition.
