Paradigm, the prominent cryptocurrency investment firm, announced on Monday the launch of a $2.5 billion venture fund — named Paradigm One — dedicated to investing in the next generation of crypto companies and protocols. The fund marks the largest single venture capital fund ever raised specifically for the crypto industry, surpassing the previous record of $2.2 billion set by Andreessen Horowitz earlier this year.
A New Milestone in Crypto Venture Capital
Founded in 2018 by Matt Huang (former Sequoia Capital partner focused on crypto) and Fred Ehrsam (co-founder of Nasdaq-listed Coinbase), Paradigm initially structured its first fund as a hedge fund and raised $400 million. According to the Financial Times, that fund generated an extraordinary annual internal rate of return of over 200% through the first half of 2021, with assets peaking at $10 billion.
For Paradigm One, the firm initially targeted $1.25 billion but ended up raising twice that amount. Ehrsam told the Financial Times, “It is probably small relative to where we’re going in 10 years.” The partners explained in a statement: “Our conviction in these beliefs has only strengthened over the past three years, and we are pleased to announce a new $2.5 billion venture fund to continue investing in the next generation of crypto companies and protocols. This new fund will invest alongside our existing flagship fund across all stages and geographies.”
They further emphasized, “This new fund and its size are reflective of crypto being the most exciting frontier in technology. Over the past decade, crypto has come a long way. The journey is just beginning, and the potential of crypto has never been more clear.”
Industry Impact and Outlook
The launch of Paradigm One signals sustained institutional confidence in digital assets despite occasional market volatility. The $2.5 billion war chest will likely be deployed across a wide range of sectors including Layer 1 and Layer 2 scaling solutions, decentralized finance (DeFi), non-fungible tokens (NFTs), Web3 infrastructure, and regulatory-compliant financial products. With its ability to invest at every stage — from seed to late-stage — Paradigm is poised to accelerate the growth of the next wave of crypto pioneers.
Industry observers note that the size of the fund reflects not only Paradigm's track record but also a broader shift in traditional venture capital toward embracing crypto as a mainstream asset class. As the first $2.5 billion pure-play crypto venture fund, Paradigm One sets a new benchmark for the industry and underscores the enormous capital flowing into the blockchain ecosystem.
