Global payments giant PayPal announced on April 6, 2025, that its PayPal and Venmo platforms will add support for Chainlink (LINK) and Solana (SOL). Starting in the coming weeks, users can directly buy, hold, sell, and transfer these two cryptocurrencies within their accounts. This expansion marks PayPal's continued push into the crypto space, aiming to meet growing demand for diverse digital assets.
User-Driven Asset Additions
May Zabaneh, Vice President of Product for Blockchain, Crypto, and Digital Currencies at PayPal, said the decision to include Chainlink and Solana was a direct response to user feedback. "Our users want more choice and flexibility," Zabaneh stated. "By adding these tokens, we are moving closer to making digital assets more accessible in everyday finance." Since initially supporting major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum in 2020, PayPal has steadily broadened its crypto services, launching Venmo crypto features in 2021.
Why Chainlink and Solana?
Chainlink, a decentralized oracle network, connects blockchain data to real-world information, enabling advanced smart contracts, cross-chain interoperability, and more. Its native token LINK plays a key role in DeFi, insurance, and gaming. Solana, a high-performance blockchain, processes thousands of transactions per second (TPS) and hosts a wide range of dApps and NFT projects. Zabaneh noted that these assets represent the cutting edge of blockchain technology and offer users richer use cases.
Impact on Crypto Payments Ecosystem
With LINK and SOL now available on PayPal and Venmo, millions of users can access these assets without leaving the familiar interface, eliminating the need for separate exchange accounts. PayPal said it will continue to provide a trusted transaction environment and explore more cryptocurrencies based on market trends and user needs. Analysts believe this move boosts mainstream adoption, especially given Solana's potential in payments and gaming, and Chainlink's value as a data bridge — which could integrate into PayPal's cross-border transfers and merchant services.
Industry Outlook
Despite ongoing crypto market volatility, PayPal's sustained expansion signals traditional fintech giants' long-term confidence in digital assets. Venmo, popular among younger users, may attract more Gen Z and millennials to crypto. Specific launch dates have not been announced, but features are expected to roll out gradually to eligible US users in the coming weeks.
